Obituary of John Lorne FCPA
1924 – 2017
It is with gratitude for a long life, well lived, that we announce the passing of John Lorne Baxter. He passed peacefully in his sleep with his devoted wife of 31 years, Margaret Baxter (nee Miller), by his side.
Lorne was predeceased by his parents Frederick and Gussie Maie Baxter, sister and brother-in-law Audrey and Paul Abrecht and first wife Joy Baxter.
In addition to Margaret he is survived, and will be missed, by his sons Daniel Baxter (Margot Willox) and David Baxter (Beth), daughter Lori Baxter and former daughter-in-law June Baxter; grandchildren Derek (Sam Fisher), Shannon (Halley Szeto), Graeme, Eva, Angela and Rebecca; nephew and honourary son Rudy Abrecht (Michèle); nephews Gary Abrecht (M’El) and Stephen Abrecht (Janet Shenk); niece Susan Joyet (Michel) and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. In addition, Lorne’s memory will be cherished by Margaret’s brother Jack Miller (Irene); nephew Eddy Miller; niece Andrea Miller (Eric Frappier) and son Théo; cousin Mary Rockwell and her daughter Lori Spada (Mario) and family; and cousin Mike Gouthro (Lilianne) and family.
A native Calgarian, Lorne graduated from the University of Manitoba before entering the accounting profession. His first firm was Alger, Baxter & Co., which later merged with P.S. Ross & Sons (then Touche Ross, now Deloitte). There he spent his career enjoying the work with his many friends, colleagues and clients in Canada and Japan. He served for many years on the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, including a year as President. When not working, he loved nothing better than to be with family, hiking in the Rockies (or up Mt. Fuji), travelling and reading historical plaques. And all things related to trains – riding them as part of his travels, watching them go through the Spiral Tunnels, finding their abandoned tracks in the Rogers Pass, taking grandchildren to Railway Days at Heritage Park… He will always be remembered for his unflinchingly positive spirit, his beautiful smile and the bounce in his step.
