Obituary of Helen THOMPSON

THOMPSON, Helen

Helen, much loved mother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away Monday, March 23, 2020 in her 97th year—a life well lived.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Ellen; sister, Phyllis; sister-in-law, Brenda; and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Helen was a child of the depression which helped to form her work ethic and spirit. At the age of 5, she packed her own lunch and walked a mile to the one room school to join her siblings and friends. High school matriculation was an important goal requiring her to work for 2 years for her room and board to achieve this objective. In the later 1940’s she graduated from the CGH School of Nursing forming life-long friendships. Following her marriage, she lived the majority of her life in the Milo community, working on the farm alongside her husband. In later life she returned to nursing, working for 17 years at Extendicare in Vulcan. Many talents were gifted to this strong, capable, and independent woman: nursing, sewing, upholstering, painting/wall-papering, gardening, cake decorating, cooking (even her sister says she made the best pastry). She enjoyed dancing (still dancing earlier this year), curling, travelling, playing the occasional practical joke, and working. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Hal; parents, Freda and George; brothers, Jim and Bob; special nephew, Ken; many brothers- and sisters-in law as well as nieces and nephews.  Thank you to the Mayfair Care Centre as they cared for and cared about Helen. At her request, there will be no formal service.  Private family interment will follow at a later date.  If so desired, donations may be made in Helen’s name to Milo Library, memo: Milo Library Archives, Box 30, Milo, AB T0L 1L0.
