Obituary of Tyler VU

December 18, 1998 – Calgary, Alberta
August 11, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tyler Vu, of Calgary, AB on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, at the Peter Lougheed Hospital, at the age of 21 years.

Tyler was many things to many people; he was not only the youngest in our family, but he was also the little brother in our Wushu community. As he got older, he became the big brother that took care of all the new students before, during and after class. We always heard that Tyler was very wise for his age, and this stands to be true because time and time again, he would definitely act as the big brother to both his older siblings. To most Tyler was a friend and to people he actually liked he was an even better friend. Tyler was a resilient, strong and dedicated athlete. Tyler started martial arts at really young age. He was the golden child as soon as he joined, and he always exceled at sports. He was asked to compete in China at the age of five, even taking a test to be a grand master when he couldn’t even read the questions on the test.  As the years progressed, he went to more competitions and won more medals. He was in multiple newspaper articles. But that was Tyler for you. Tyler was also a golfer and an avid volleyball player. We can’t comment on his volleyball skills, but with the amount of gear he bought, he was either a sponsored pro or just an enthusiastic collector. As for golfing, he was the saving grace for his older brother that has always been bad. When our dad would be looking for a partner for a tournament, he would often have to choose between the child that drives it three hundred yards down the fairway, or the son that shanks it twenty yards short of the lady’s tee box. That was how Tyler became our dad’s favorite son. If there was one thing Tyler took pride in, was his looks. He was the second most handsome son and self-proclaimed skinniest one in the family. He loved going to the gym, dying his hair enough colors to make one think he was in a Korean boy band, and had a shoe collection big enough to save a third world country from being shoeless.

Although his time with us was far too short, his impact on our lives is a force to be reckoned with. Our dearest Tyler will never be forgotten. It was very clear that Tyler is deeply loved by everyone he crossed paths with, and the sheer amount of people that showed to say their final good-byes at the hospital was breath taking. From being kicked out of the waiting rooms for exceeding the capacity limits, to our neighbor’s friend randomly commenting on the crazy number of Asians just hanging outside of the hospital, it was always a good time with Tyler.

Tyler leaves behind his parents, Phong Vu and Ping Zou; his older sister Ashley Vu, and brother Andy Vu.
