November 21, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Paul Lappas passed away at South Health Campus on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at the age of 80 years.

Paul was born in Karditsa, Greece on April 10, 1940. He had nine siblings whom he treasured. He moved to Sudbury, ON in 1965, where he started his first job in mining. Shortly thereafter, Paul brought his brothers, John, Bob, and Jim Lappas; and his cousin Leo Paredrakos from Greece to Canada where they began their first restaurant venture, “Johnny’s Bar”. Paul married his beloved Muriel on July 5, 1969, and ten years later, they moved to Calgary.

Paul was a very successful businessman and a proud family man; he lived with strong values and integrity. He created and nurtured a family business, which supported many family members. He was pleased with his entrepreneurial success, and made sure to share his experience and knowledge with others. One of his many adventures led him to the US where he secured a degree in Mechanics.

Paul enjoyed spending time with family, watching sports, specifically hockey and soccer; and working with his hands. He was a pillar in the community and enjoyed contributing through various sponsorships. Paul, and his late wife Muriel, were enthusiastic sponsors of the Airdrie Thunder Hockey team and passionately attended most games. He loved meeting and getting to know his customers and members of the community, who became his friends. Whether you were family, friends, neighbors, customers or just someone in passing, he always made you feel welcomed and valued.

Paul has left a legacy of strength and honor onto his family. His legacy is of a very fine man, who enriched his family’s life.

Paul will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and compassion.

Paul is survived by his sister Asimoula Kassous, his brothers, Jim, Bob (Olympia) and John (Evangelia). He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Muriel Lappas; his mother Xrisanthe, and his father Vasilious.

Paul was a great supporter of his community, but due to the provincial restrictions the service will be held private. We look forward to celebrating Paul’s life, when it is safe to do so. A private graveside service will take place in Parry Sounds, Ontario, at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church & Calgary Hellenic Community, Heart & Stroke Foundation, or your local food bank. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Paul’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

The family would like to thank the ICU team at South Health Campus for their care, compassion and kindness, and for being with Paul when they were unable to. The family extends their sincere gratitude.
