Giovanni Ciccaglione

Obituary of Giovanni Ciccaglione

February 15, 1927 - October 14, 2021

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at the age of 94 years.

Dad was born in Sessano del Molise, Isernia, Italy. His only brother died at 18-months old leaving Dad to be raised as an only child. As a new father, he continued to help his parents farm the land, he also worked in Switzerland to earn extra money to provide for his young family and aging parents.

With an empty wallet and a hope filled heart, Dad and our expecting mother (Antonietta) immigrated to Canada in 1966 to provide a better life for themselves and their two small children, Mario and Rosa. They welcomed their youngest child Dina in 1967. The morning after their arrival in Calgary, Dad had employment waiting for him. He worked in construction as a labourer and later transferred to the Calgary Board of Education as a caretaker for 10 years. He retired in 1991.

During his retirement he babied his tomatoes and catered to the small garden he had at the same house that he and Mom lived in for 53 years. His pride and joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved deeply.

Mom and Dad travelled back to Italy and ventured to Las Vegas as well as Yuma Arizona where they created joy-filled memories.

Dad sacrificed so much to provide for his family and ensured we had everything we needed plus more. His stubborn attitude to “always forge ahead” and “never quit” has been instilled in each of us. Dad always said, “work hard, be honest, save your money and think before you spend it.” He was a joker and a prankster, making all of us laugh; but, above all else, his stories about the past will always echo in each of our hearts.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 68 years Antonietta, his three children and their spouses, Mario (Betty), Rosa (Tino) and Dina (Ken); along with five grandchildren, Rick (Corey), Vince (Suzy), Andy, Alicia and Erica; his precious five great-grandchildren, Claudia, Kayla, Aliyah, Oden and Arlo; and sisters-in-law, Amelia Sciarra and Gina Polinelli of Blairmore, AB; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews from Italy, Switzerland, Canmore, Drumheller and Calgary.

A Private Funeral Mass will be held. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes in Giovanni’s name may be made directly to a charity of your choice. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed here.

Our family would like to gratefully thank the staff at Whitehorn Village Retirement Residence where he was graciously looked after for nine years. THANK YOU is not enough for the dedication and professional support provided to our Dad. He was very fortunate and blessed to have lived there. You are ALL AMAZING--our family will never forget you! A heart-felt Thank You to Dr. Ahamed who dedicated her time and love towards him, especially during his final hours.
