 Calgary, Alberta

Arlene Smith, much loved mom, grandma, sister, aunt and friend, passed away on September 21, 2022 at the age of 86 years.

Arlene was born on December 31, 1935 and grew up on a farm east of High River, AB. Arlene attended Grade 12 in Red Deer and then the University of Alberta from 1954 – 1958, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Home Economics in 1957 and a Bachelor of Education in 1958. It was at the UofA that Arlene met Garry A. Smith, (BSc Engineering, 1958) who became her beloved husband in 1958. They made their life together in Calgary. Garry passed away in 1986.

By far, Arlene’s favourite thing was spending time with her family. She will be missed by her son, Scott and daughter-in-law, Lynda; daughter, Nancy and son-in-law, Jack; grandkids, Megan, Brenn (Amy), Jane and Ben; great-grandson, Robbie; brother, Jack and sister-in-law, Carol; and many nieces and nephews.

Arlene loved to spend time with family and friends at the cabin at Lake Windermere, travelling and tending her flowers and herbs. She was an avid golfer and long-time member of The Glencoe Golf Club. She always enjoyed time with her golf chums and looked forward to get-togethers with her long-time friends and classmates. Arlene’s career included teaching clothing construction and managing the clothing department at SAIT. After retiring, Arlene pursued her interest in history, spending many years volunteering at Heritage Park and at the Glenbow Museum.

Pursuant to Arlene’s wishes, a private family memorial will be held. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

In living memory of Arlene Smith, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
