Obituary of Leonard Charles Sevick

February 18, 1930 – Winnipeg, Manitoba

September 29, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Leonard Sevick, loving husband, father, and grandfather of Calgary AB, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at the age of 92.

Len was an only child, born and raised in Winnipeg, MB by his mother and grandmother following the tragic death of his father. His mother never remarried. Summers were spent at North Battleford and Jackfish Lake in Saskatchewan under the watchful eyes of his paternal grandparents. The family lived through the devastating Red River flood of 1950, forced out of their home for months. Len’s beloved Studebaker washed away by flood waters.

He went on to study Engineering at the University of Manitoba. Len carried on the family railway tradition as a summer student, inspecting bridges (unharnessed!) for the CNR. After graduation, he joined the only company that he would ever work for, Imperial Oil. Len was well suited to his career as an Engineer. Possessed of a keen intellect, discipline, strong work ethic, and a warm heart, he rose to senior management over the course of his 35 years with Esso/Imperial Oil.

Fate intervened at Imperial Oil when, through a blind date, he met the love of his life, Elsie (who was also working for Imperial). They were married in 1953. Their love has served as an incredible example of what a life-long partnership can be. Together they had three sons (it was a full house!), and eventually welcomed three daughters-in-law and five grandchildren to the family. After retiring in 1987 he left the corporate world behind, in favor of the golf course. He played often in Calgary and Tucson, AZ. He was an emeritus member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club. He tallied no less than four holes-in-one and shot his age twice. He enjoyed the competition and played better when competing (unlike his sons). The annual men's member-guest at Tucson National was always a highlight.

Elsie and Len spent several decades as “snowbirds”, cultivating a rich life in Tucson. They cherish their many American friends and Len was profoundly sorrowful when it became evident that he would not be able to return to Arizona.

No two words capture Len so accurately as these: humble and kind. He was a steady man, providing a safe presence for his wife, sons, and grandchildren throughout their lives. In his final days, he remained organized, calm, and courageous, never complaining despite his growing difficulty. His warm smile and kind eyes will live in the memories of those he leaves behind, as we remember him fondly and often.

Len is survived by his wife Elsie, and their three sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Susan Sevick, Brian and Karen Sevick, and Robert and Brenda Sevick. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jessica, Johnathan, Jane, Laura, and Kristen; as well as his cousin, Joanna Morrow. Len was predeceased by his parents, Margaret (2001) and Leonard (1931).
