Obituary of Kanti Lal Kar

 

July 27, 1943 – Bangladesh

October 3, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

 

Mr. Kanti Kar of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2022, at the age of 79 years with his family by his side.

 

Kanti was born in Bangladesh on July 27, 1943. He was the second oldest of six boys. During the Partition as a child he moved to Calcutta, West Bengal, India where he was raised with his five brothers in Dum Dum Park. He immigrated to Canada in 1975.

 

Kanti graduated from The Calcutta Technical School of Park Institute with a degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He was introduced to his wife Uma Kar during Durga Puja, an important Hindu religious festival in West Bengal. He enjoyed a successful 30-year career as an Engineering Technologist at the CanmetEnergy Research Centre under Natural Resources Canada in Calgary and Devon, AB.

 

He was a proud member of the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professional of Alberta (ASET).

 

Kanti accomplished much throughout his life and was particularly proud of co-inventing and obtaining a patent for a two-stage hydro cyclone system for separating oily fluids for the Government of Canada.

 

Kanti enjoyed a passion for photography, tools, electronic gadgets, and automobile maintenance. He was a steadfast handyman and enjoyed a fixing challenge. He loved spending time with his malti-poo dogs, Yogi, and Mango.

 

Kanti’s most memorable vacations were when he traveled to Russia, explored nine countries in Europe and found their ancestral home in Bangladesh. His favourite song was Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy”. He will be most remembered for his warm, wholesome smile and his honest, pure heart.

 

Besides his loving wife, Kanti is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Rima and Niranjan of the San Francisco Bay Area, California; son and daughter-in-law Ramit Raj and Anastasia of Calgary, AB; three grandchildren, Sanika Rani of San Francisco Bay Area, California, and Kira Aria and Atticus Elon of Calgary, AB. Kanti is also survived by his five brothers and sisters-in-law, Manik of Kolkata, India, Kanak (Rekha) of Calgary, AB, Ratan (Shika) of Calgary, AB,  Partha of Calgary, AB, and Dilip (Anita) of Calgary, AB; as well as numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

 

Kanti was predeceased by his parents, Birendra Kumar and Rani Bala; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ashoke and Biva Rani.

 

Memorial Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street N, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
