Obituary of Cheryl Ruth Haney

June 26, 1952 – North Head Grand Manan, New Brunswick

August 28, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear sister, Cheryl Ruth Haney, of Calgary, AB, who passed away on Monday, August 28,  2023, at the age of 71 years.

Cheryl was born in North Head, Grand Manan, NB, on June 26, 1952, and spent her early years in New Brunswick.  Much of her adult years were spent between Quebec and Ontario where she pursued a marketing career.  Calgary is where she made her home for the last eight years.

Cheryl loved her family and friends with all her heart. Her favourite times were spent being close to her loved ones, treasuring special celebrations and travelling to interesting places all while enjoying a hearty laugh and a glass of fine red wine.  Cheryl loved playing golf, bike riding and rollerblading.  Favourite hobbies included stained glass, woodworking and, of course, all things wine.  A memorable highlight that she was particularly proud of was carrying the Olympic torch in 2010 while it made its way across Canada to the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Cheryl suffered a very serious stroke in 2015 while living in Mississauga, ON.  She miraculously survived it but had some permanent memory loss.  She moved to Calgary to continue her healing process and was able to live independently in 2016 with family close by.  In 2020, Cheryl was diagnosed with stroke dementia.  Cheryl moved to Rocky Ridge Retirement in 2022 where she was well cared for.  She quickly became part of their wonderful community and made many new friends. She became known for being the Hat Lady as she loved wearing one of her many hats each day which always brought a smile to everyone.   The residents and staff loved her happy demeanour and sense of humour.

Cheryl suffered a second serious stroke on August 26, 2023, and passed away two days later.   She will be dearly missed by all of us!

Cheryl is survived by her four siblings, Robert Haney (Jane), David Haney (Brenda), Janice Miller (Gordon), and Darlene Tucker, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, W. Floyd Haney and Ruth Haney, and brother-in-law, Richard Tucker.
