Condolences
My condolences to Maurice’s family. We only worked together a short time at Husky but he was a very bright, positive, and mentally sharp guy that had a great perspective. Rest in Peace
Maurice was my supervisor when I worked at Amoco in the early 90s in the Decision Support Group.
He also was a long time active member of CORS (Canadian Operational Research Society).
He supervised some of our student projects in OPMA411 in the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary.
I used his Quantitative Modeling example of natural gas distribution in my MGST391 Business Analytics course (which had 8 sections of about 60 students each this term).
Eternal gratitude to you. You taught me that strengths and weaknesses are part of the same equation. You shared your knowledge with passion. My sincere condolences to Maurice's family. Thank you Maurice. RIP!
We cannot verbalise in the way that some have in Maurice's obituaries but some of the words are so well put. Our favourites are gentle and encouraging, a humble, loving, genius who has left his mark on our lives forever. Jackie and family, we are with you in heart and spirit and through the service. With all our love and prayers, Janet, Charlie and family xoxox
I am so sorry to hear of Maurice’s passing, a great loss for all of those whose paths crossed his. My deepest and heartfelt condolences to Jackie and family. I had the pleasure of working with Maurice in 80’s at Dome and Amoco. He was a brilliant man, a great mentor and role model, and a wonderful human being. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
I had known Maurice professionally since the early 90s and very much respected him and enjoyed my interactions with him. I appreciated his contribution to our department at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary, in addition to his contributions the field of Operations Research/Management Science/Business Analytics in Calgary. My condolences to the entire family.
I had the pleasure of knowing Maurice through our time at the Father Lacombe Day Program and I found him to be a very kind and gentle person. My most sincere condolences to all his family and friends. RIP Maurice! - Lucy
I am very sorry to learn of Maurice's recent passing. I offer my sincere condolences to Jackie and the children.
I will always remember my working with Maurice in the early '80's on various systems increasing the automation at Dome.
Maurice's skills and work will not be forgotten.
I worked with Maurice in the '8o's at Dome, Amoco, BP.
Maurice inspired me to be a better person.
His honesty, friendship, generosity, easy way; always giving the benefit of the doubt.
He modeled excellence, dedication and commitment. And then gave me room to follow or not.
He set an example and allowed me to climb to his heights in my own time with my own struggles.
He was a genius. I am not. By coaching, mentoring and tweaking he nudged my contributions from good to excellent.
Maurice influenced my work and life and therefore challenged me to be better, to learn, to be generous and forgiving.
Maurice taught me there are often two ways of doing things: the "brute force" way and the "meta" way.
Even though the meta way may initially take more thought and time, it is repeatable and robust.
The meta way has elegance and beauty.
I feel Maurice had a sense and practice of science and art that is very rare and special.
I am privileged to know him and have him impact my life.
I practice, cultivate, and emulate his ways as best I can.
Maurice was the best Operations Research practitioner I know. He was an inspiration to those he worked with in the Calgary oil and gas industry. And he contributed to the Calgary Chapter of the Canadian Operational Research Society during many years as President and other positions. A life well spent.
I'm so sorry to learn of Maurice's passing, and I offer my sincere condolences to his family.
One of the great honours of my career was to have introduced Maurice and his talents to Husky Oil, where his brilliance and dedication were recognized and put to immediate use.
Maurice once advised me on a particularly intractable (for me) problem in my personal financial model, which still bears his stamp with 'Elliott's J2 variable'. He lives on.
Jackie, Julie and Philip...I was deeply upset the read of Maurice's passing. He truly was such a gentleman, always kind and friendly whenever he visited the office. I will pray for him and you for comfort and healing. I am dreadfully sorry for your great loss. Pam
The world has lost a giant.
Untold lives have benefited from Maurice’s intellect and altruism, and he lived a life of diligence, integrity, passion and commitment.
He led by example and combined his extraordinary mathematical and operations research genius to save countless hours of toil by others. He introduced Operations Research principles to many, many people who came to learn, not its academic elegance, but its real-world application in making their lives immensely better. Through Maurice, those who were incredibly fortunate to have known him discovered the beauty of optimization and its applicability in finding solutions to their problems and situations.
Through his generosity in volunteering of his time and talent, he helped innumerable students at Western Canada High School and the University of Calgary gain exposure to their ideal careers and add tremendous value to their lives and indeed our country.
His soft-spoken manner and patient striving to understand the challenges of his colleagues endeared him to all and he made our lives better. He lifted our burdens, not in a metaphysical way, but through solid mathematical analysis. His solutions and assistance were tangible and real.
Maurice was a quiet and yet magnetic prodigy who had compassion for not just humanity but all living creatures. He was a legend, an inspiration and a role model. Far from unidimensional, his interests and talents were vast, and he had a deep appreciation for the arts and music. His humility belied his greatness and whilst we may never achieve his stature, we can certainly honour his memory by doing our best to remember and live by his guidance. We are all indebted to him and his legacy. His footsteps left the world immensely better.
I treasure the memories and will miss him greatly.
So very sorry for your loss. Much support to you Julie, and your whole family.
Our most sincere condolences Jackie to you and your family. Maurice was a very kind and generous individual, offering to tutor our son in Mathematics. We will always remember Maurice as that kind person and, walking Teddy.
Maryse, Rob, Samuel and Maxim. Your neighbours.
Sorry to hear this news. I worked with Maurice on a project at Husky Energy and it was a pleasure to work with him. He was always willing to lend his knowledge and help. He relished challenges and I learned alot from watching him tackle problems. He was a lovely person who held the respect of many.
