Condolences
Was saddened to hear the news of the passing of Jim. To my Aunt Lucy I offer sincere sympathies of the loss of Jim. Thinking of you and all the family and keeping you in my prayers. Monica Maloney
I was so pleased to have attended this past Saturday's Celebration to commemorate our long time Calgary Folk Club mate, "Briggsy". He was a special man and a fixture for years as the chief bartender at the Club - always cheerful and amusing. Jim travelled with the Wild Colonial Boys to Australia in 1997 to promote Big Rock beer in that wild colonial territory. He was an outstanding promoter and fabulous fun on the road. I am deeply saddened by his loss and send my heartfelt condolences to Lucy, Greg and Doug. The service was wonderful and Doug's eulogy was excellent.
Cheers John.
I met Jim at my daughter's wedding to his son Doug. My memory if him is one of admiration for his love of parenting. Jim had an adventurous spirit that seemed unstoppable and I enjoyed meeting him and watching him in action very much. Jim was a man who left, in me, an indelible impression for his love of life and of his family. My condolences to Lucy and family for the loss of such a gem of a man.
Jim and Lucy (my aunt) helped me greatly transition to life in Calgary after I moved from the Maritimes. I cherish my memories of those early years when I dropped over, perhaps too often. I also fondly remember my introduction through them to good Chinese food, the Calgary Folk Club, and Big Rock Traditional beer. Thanks to Jim and Lucy my roots in Calgary are deep. All the very best, Ralph
Uncle Jim Briggs — one of a kind! Our condolences to to Lucy, Doug and Greg and their families.
Jim was always warm and welcoming to what must have seemed to him to be an endless stream of nephews, nieces and associated spouses. He welcomed us in 1977 — first by opening his home to us and then introducing us to the Calgary Folk Club and his love of music. He was an important addition to the Downey family gatherings and to those of our extended family in Calgary. Jim was a great friend and uncle. We will miss him.
Anne and Bernard Downey
I did not know Jim very well, but I remember him as a man of boundless energy and enthusiasm.
My condolences to Aunt Lucy and their progeny.
So very sad to hear of Jim's passing. He was considered a good 'mate' by the Wild Colonial Boys and we were always guaranteed a few laughs and big smiles whenever we met. He played a very large role in the operation of the Calgary Folk Club and, I believe, the Club was as important to him as he was to the Club. There are many 'Jim' stories and I'm sure they will still circulate with the great affection we all felt for him.
Lucy, I am so sorry. Many years ago, I remember complimenting Jim on his neatly trimmed beard. He explained that he had to keep it at a certain length during sports car season so it wouldn't blow over his face when he was driving his Healy. He always had that wonderful twinkle in his eye, as if life, for him was a complete joy.
Lucy our thoughts are with you and your family on hearing of Jim's passing. I fondly remember times with Jim at car club events, traveling to Red Deer for meetings and particularly traveling together in the Morgan to the VanDusen car show in Vancouver. Unfortunately we will be out of town for celebration of life but will be thinking of you.
Aunt Lucy, Doug, Greg, and families, I'm so sorry for your loss. I, like Michael Cashin, can't say that I knew Jim very well......but I feel like I knew him forever. I do remember well, Uncle Jim telling me how grateful he was to have met and married Lucy. I also remember the peaceful, joyful smile on Jim's face as he soaked up the love at family gatherings (and he's not the only one of us that looks like that at family gatherings). He was well loved and will be missed!
Dear Aunt Lucy, Doug, Greg and family,
Sending heart heart condolences. I have so many fond memories of Uncle Jim, such as joining him at his car club breakfasts and fiddle music jam nights in Edmonton and Calgary. He will be missed
Lucy I am so so sorry to hear of Jim"s passing..I first met him in 1973 in my search for info on Formula Vee racing. He was most encouraging and helpful as was his way. We were fierce competitors on the track which was always fun. Later sharing our interest in folk music with him behind the bar was also most enjoyable. The old racing gang is getting smaller and the memories get bigger and we will hopefully all meet again someday - to have a final victory lap. Thanks for the memories... Murray Munsie # 10
My prayers and genuine sympathy go out to Lucy and her two sons at this difficult time. Jim was a good and kind friend to me for many years starting in the mid 80's. I was delighted to learn we shared an interest in 1932 Fords when I was first introduced to him by Jim's good friend Ernie Taube. Jim and I always had a friendly rivalry between us as to which of us had the best 1932 Ford Coupe. One of the funniest things that involved Jim and my family was when my wife was due with our youngest daughter. Jim had come over to my house to look at my car and talk about the progress he was making on his own car. My wife kept saying it's time to head to the Grace Hospital because she was ready to deliver. The urgency of the situation seemed to escape us as we continued to talk about cars. Finally she demanded we "shut up and get moving." My daughter was born 20 minutes after we arrived at the hospital. Later that week when I told Jim he said "See, there was no need to rush, she had plenty of time!"
God speed to you my friend as you take your final journey. I hope you knew how much our friendship meant to me for the time we knew each other.
Dear Aunt Lucy, I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Jim's passing. He was a colourful character who reached for all the best in life. He will be missed.
Aunt Lucie,
I am so sorry to hear about Uncle Jim.
But .......if there is another man who lived a better life ...... that is after all the test......... and I believe that Uncle Jim gets a gold star......he met a great woman, raised a great family and lived a rally great life.
I absolutely love the picture .... it is the man I remember
I can't say that I knew him very well......but I feel like I knew him forever.
He was the hippy of hippies (sucessful at life, and great hair) and we are just a little less without him.
Michael
I will miss the Tuesday evening suppers with Uncle Jim and Aunt Lucy from the good food to the wide ranging conversations. Unfortunately I will never be able to get uncle Jim back for all the crib wins that he took off of me and aunt lucy. To this day I’ll never understand how he managed to have the luck with cards that he did.
My best wishes to Aunt lucy, Doug, Greg, and the rest of the family
JJ
I had the privledge in the mid-seventies to spend part of the summer with Aunt Lucy and Uncle Jim. Being a teenager moving to the West looking to find work and my way in life, they were so kind to take me in and help me out. My best memory of Uncle Jim was hauling his race car with the whole family (including infant wee Dougie) to Edmonton for his beloved races. He was brilliant in both racing and fixing his car on the fly with that wonderful grin and great disposition. I loved it and was amazed at the hail storm the size of gold balls on the return trip banging off the side of that van.
We were blessed to have them in PEI for a night on their way to NFLD a decade ago. We ate lobster, drank beer and argued over the Rangers-Canucks hockey final game that night - great stuff especially with that wonderful charm of Aunt Lucy keeping everything nice and loose. I figure God's truck is a little more colorful and is running a little better today.
Aunt Lucy - our prayers are with you.
Lucy and family - Please accept my sincerest condolences. Jim will be very much missed by the few remaining Formula V
racers. Always a fair and friendly competitor. As a life-time owner of the Austin Healy, he showed us what loyalty to a make
means.
Jim Briggs was the man who won Lucy"s Heart.
He could sing Rocky Top with the best of them. (Codroy Valley In Joe and Ann's House)
My brother Mike called him the original Hippie. That was a badge of honor to him.
His "joie de vivre" was infectious.
We are sad to hear of his passing. A good one has left us.
Uncle Jim Rest in Peace
To Lucy, Greg and Doug...our condolences

Doug, your dad was a very special man, and will always remember him smiling and joking in his chair whenever we would be at your house as teenagers. Our heartfelt condolences to you, Greg and your mom - we are thinking of you and fondly remembering your amazing dad.
With lots of love from Mike (and Alethea and Robert)
We were very sad to hear of Jim’s passing. Our sincere condolences go out to Lucy, Doug and Greg and their families. I will remember Jim as a fun loving, outgoing person who was always ready with a funny line and a quick come back. We met Jim and Lucy 1977 and enjoyed our first Christmas dinner in Calgary with the Briggs family. Jim and I connected immediately as we were both car nuts and into folk music. Jim introduced us to the Calgary Folk club where we enjoyed many wonderful Friday evenings listening to great music. In later years we served beer together at the bar. Jim was loved by all of his Folk Club friends and he will be truly missed.
Jim will be missed by the many members of the VintageSportsCarClubOfCalgary. He has been a member for as long as I can remember. His laugh smile and stories were always enjoyed and I remember him telling me the time he gave Jonie Mitchell a ride in his Healey. He will be missed at our events.
