Obituary of Tony Chun Ho Chan 陳駿豪

July 27, 1944 – Toishan, China

August 5, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

With heavy hearts, the family of Tony Chan announces his passing on August 5, 2024, at the age of 80 years.

Tony was born in Toishan, China, in 1944, as the youngest member of the Chan family. Growing up during wartime was challenging, with the family moving from village to village in search of shelter and safety. At the age of eleven, he moved to Hong Kong, driven by his family’s desire for a better life. Seeking even greater opportunities, he immigrated to Canada at 24, initially settling in Innisfail, AB, before relocating to Stettler, AB. In 1970, he returned to Hong Kong to find a wife and married Helen the following year. Shortly after their wedding, they moved back to Stettler.

Determined to build a successful life in Canada, Tony worked tirelessly alongside his siblings, dedicating long hours at the Club Cafe restaurant. He valued the support of living with his siblings and parents under one roof in this small town. Due to his humble beginnings, he prioritized security for his family. With a natural sense for saving and pursuing business opportunities, he invested in properties in Stettler. His family grew, and he became the proud father of Elaine, Julia, Maria, and Michael. In 1985, Tony and Helen decided to move the family to Calgary to prepare for their children’s future educational opportunities.  After owning and operating Calgary restaurants for 20 years, he hung up his apron to enjoy retirement life with Helen.

Tony’s legacy is defined by his hard work, entrepreneurial spirit, and deep commitment to his loved ones. His greatest joys were spending time with his family, playing mahjong, socializing with friends, travelling and tending to his fish. He is remembered for his generosity, kindness, and profound love for his family.

Besides his loving wife Helen, Tony is survived by his three daughters, Elaine, Julia, and Maria, and their husbands, Gary, Sherman, and Trevor; his son Michael and daughter-in-law Kristy; and nine grandchildren, Alyssa, Kaitlyn, Tyler, Isabella, Brady, Jevin, Gabrielle, Emma, and Charlotte.

Tony’s warm smile and gentle spirit touched the lives of many. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
