Obituary of Jean Eleanor Coughlin
March 7, 1928 – Halifax, Nova Scotia
August 20, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Jean Eleanor Coughlin passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, August 20, 2024. Her final days were spent surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and friends who adored her. This is a reflection of how Jean lived her life - surrounded by people who loved her.
Jean is survived by her three children, Danny Coughlin (Lisa), Colleen Coughlin, and Shannon Olson (Brian); her grandchildren, Lindsay (Ash), Stephanie (Glenn), Courtnay (Cody), Kelsey (Mike), Paige (Colton), and Brooke; and three great-grandchildren, Aurora, Dusty, and Callum. She will be deeply missed by many other relatives and close friends.
Jean was predeceased by her husband Gerry, her sister Pauline Denne, her eldest son Stephen Coughlin (Janine), and her two grandchildren, Callie, and Erin.
Jean was born on March 7th, 1928, in Halifax, NS, where she grew up and later met her husband Gerry while he was serving with the Royal Canadian Navy. They got married and moved out West to live and fulfill their dream of raising a large family in Calgary, AB. Jean lived her entire life caring for her children, babysitting her grandchildren (and grandogs!), providing 'senior council' to all friends and family who came to visit, and loving her three great-grandchildren. She loved the Calgary Stampede and supported her husband, Gerry, as he volunteered for the organization, and she remained an annual attendee until very recently. She was passionate about music and loved to sing and especially enjoyed the Lawrence Welk Show. Her favorite songs were always being played in her home and they were playing for her until the very end.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. James Catholic Church (5504-20th Street SW, Calgary) on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. immediately followed by a Luncheon in the St. James Rectory. The family invites you to wear blue, sparkles, and/or your best broach, if you plan to attend the service in honor of our beloved, Jean, and what made her smile.
The immediate family will attend an internment following the Luncheon, where Jean will be interned with her late husband, Gerry, at Queen’s Park Cemetery in the Veterans section.
