Obituary of Glen Gilmour

Glen Gilmour passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at the age of 55, surrounded by his loved ones. Glen was born on May 14, 1969, in Jasper, AB. He lived mostly between Vancouver, Calgary, and Jasper, the latter being where he felt most at home.

Sports were a big passion for Glen, particularly golf. Rain or shine, with friends or family, he was always ready to play. In the early years, hockey and volleyball kept him busy. He also enjoyed any chance to be outside in the mountains skiing, hiking, kayaking and paddle boarding. Glen was always up for a game of cards and Shanghai Rummy with family and friends and looked forward to his regular poker nights with buddies. Scotch in hand, Glen could be found watching a lot of golf or cheering for the San Francisco 49ers, Vancouver Canucks, or New York Rangers.

Not really a big talker, Glen’s actions spoke louder than his words. He was always there for his friends, family and colleagues, saying yes if you needed a deck built, a ride somewhere, or a good meal. Glen's love language was food. He found joy and relaxation when cooking for others, sipping something tasty and listening to Dave Matthew's Band. If he was eating out, Sushi or Greek were at the top of the list.

Travelling was something he liked to do and wanted to do more of. He and Cheryl had gone on many road trips, as well as trips to Cancun/Isla Mujeres, Cabo San Lucas, Scotland, and Australia. He also enjoyed going away to golf with his buddies, whether it was in Canada, the desert, or most recently, Myrtle Beach.

Work was important to Glen; he held a high bar around quality, service and safety. Most of his career was in the construction industry where he developed many strong relationships with peers and suppliers. His last role was Branch Manager at Hydro-Rents by BrandSafway where he oversaw teams and complex projects across Western Canada. He was especially proud of his work as project manager of the new Cancer Centre at Foothills Hospital. 

Glen leaves behind his school-age crush and partner, Cheryl Barker and her adult sons, Koltin and Sage (wife Brooke). Glen was proud to talk about these boys and their adventures, and his eyes lit up when he talked about their grandchildren, Maya and Atlas. Glen also leaves behind his mom Anne (Annie G), his dad Milt, stepmom Barb, and siblings, Sheila (Paul), Jackie (Jason), and Hugh (Adrienne). His nieces Cavell and Jordan have had many good times with Uncle Glen, from the time they were babies, to being hosted at his place for last year’s Stampede. Cheryl’s mom Barb and stepdad Dave were a huge part of Glen’s life as well and will miss him around their dinner table. Family was very important to Glen, and he was loved dearly by many aunts, uncles and cousins on all sides.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional team at Foothills ICU for their care and compassion during Glen's final days.

Glen will always be remembered as 'that guy' who could be counted on - for help, a delicious meal, a fun get-together, and a deep laugh. He was always up for a good time and made every event and interaction more fun. He will be greatly missed but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest in peace, Glen.

There will be no funeral service held at this time, but Celebrations of Glen’s Life will be held at later dates.
