Obituary of Edith Evangeline Vatcher
December 13, 1932 – Cavendish, Newfoundland
August 30, 2024 – Airdrie, Alberta
Edith “Evangeline” Vatcher, the beloved wife of Willis Clayton Vatcher, of Airdrie, AB, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024, at the age of 91 years.
Evangeline was born in Cavendish, NL, on December 13, 1932.
She moved to Airdrie, AB, on July 1, 2018, with her daughter and to be near her son and their families.
Evangeline graduated from the Teacher’s College in St. John’s, NL, with a Teaching Certificate in 1950.
Evangeline married Willis (Clayton) on July 1, 1954.
She was a member of many organizations and volunteered in many groups. She was active in her Church, ACW, NL, Women's Institute, Cavendish Historical Society and many local events.
Evangeline accomplished much throughout her life and was particularly proud of her teaching career.
Evangeline had a passion for knitting, crocheting, sewing, rug hooking, baking and all things creative.
Evangeline’s happy place was her little cabin at British Harbour, NL, where many card games were played.
Evangeline was well known for her many poems, stories, and skits. She was our very own historian, she kept records of every birth, marriage and death in her little community. Every event could be found in her journals. She will be most remembered for her wit, caring, and generous heart.
Evangeline is survived by her only daughter, Darlene Thomas, of Airdrie, AB, and only son, David Vatcher and very special daughter-in-law Tara, of Airdrie, AB; five grandchildren, Geoffrey, John, Benjamin, Bailey, and Jessie; four great-grandchildren, Chance, Brooklyn, Hunter, Skylar; and one great-great-granddaughter, Ella.
Evangeline is also survived by her brother-in-law Raymond Vatcher (Darlene), of Corner Brook, NL, sisters-in-laws Barbara O’Neil and Addy Clarke (Terry), both of Corner Brook, NL, Marjorie Vatcher (Fred), of Deer Lake, NL, Marlene Vatcher, of Toronto, ON; her lifelong friend, Lois Hicks; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Evangeline was predeceased by her husband Willis, her well loved son-in-law Patrick Thomas, three beautiful grandchildren, Danielle, Micheal, and Michelle; her parents, Ethel and Jethro Jackson, and her mother and father-in-law, Vera and William Vatcher.
Evangeline was also predeceased by her brothers, Permeanas, Hubert, and Jacob; sisters, Alice, Stella, and Vera; sisters-in-laws, Bina Jackson, Nettie Jackson, Martha Jackson, Ivy Rideout, and Leila Vatcher; brothers-in-laws, Joseph Cull, Malcolm Butt, Eric Peddle, Oscar Vatcher, Gerald Vatcher, Norman Vatcher, Austin Rideout; and her special nephew Jettie Cull.
Memorial Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Airdrie, 300 Towerlane Drive) on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mrs. Vatcher’s service streamed live (see link below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.
