Obituary of Douglas Jamison Inglis

March 21, 1956 – Montreal, Quebec

August 26, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Douglas Jamison Inglis, always and forever known as Doug, passed away at Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, AB, on Monday, August 26, 2024, at the age of 68 years. Doug’s beloved wife, Paula Marion (nee Jones), was by his side in his last moments.

Paula, Doug’s wife of 39 years, his son and daughter-in-law, Evan and Karen Inglis, along with their children, Henry, Jack, and Rose; and his son Robert Inglis, will miss him dearly. Doug’s three grandchildren will always remember his laugh and how he beamed whenever they were by his side. They were truly his pride and joy.

Doug will be dearly missed by his loving sister Erin Gibson and her husband Glenn; his niece Valerie (Mike) Menard, along with their children, Emilie and Lochlan; and his niece Alison (Matt) Maiola, along with their children, Gabriella and Gavin. Doug’s mother-in-law Marion Gaze, his brother-in-law Richard (Theresa) Jones, along with their children Owen and Brian; and his brother-in-law David Jones, sister-in-law Donna George, and their children, Gareth and Morgan, will also miss him deeply. He was predeceased by his loving father and mother, Lorne and Geraldine Inglis (nee Jamison).

There are countless members of Doug’s extended family, friends, and colleagues who will miss him, though perhaps none more than his best friend of over 50 years, Aldo (Deb) Pighin. Doug loved you Aldo, thank you for so many great memories, and for your true friendship to him.

Doug was born on March 21, 1956, in Montreal, QC, where he spent his formative years, before moving to Mississauga, ON, with his family in 1968. As a young man, Doug had claimed he was the first man to put pineapple on pizza, during his brief tenure as a pizza delivery driver. We think you would agree that anyone who could convince a small part of the world that the Hawaiian pizza was his brainchild, was one hell of a salesperson in the making.

After his illustrious pizza career, Doug followed his father Lorne into the family business with United Electric Controls (Canada) Ltd. Armed with nothing but tenacity and a lawnmower at the start, he moved upward through the business to serve in management, before helping UE expand to Western Canada in the early 1980s. This led to Doug’s move to his new home in Calgary, AB.

After moving to Calgary, Doug met his future wife Paula through mutual friends, and they were married in 1985. Shortly thereafter they welcomed their sons, Evan and Robert, and settled into the community of Silver Springs in Calgary. Doug worked incredibly hard in his career but always made time to be a caring and present father – whether as a baseball coach, or the mastermind behind school projects that no 8-year-old could have created on their own.

After over 30 years with United Electric, Doug ventured into his own business, Integ Controls & Instrumentation, and built it from the ground up with the help of his son Robert. Doug was a salesperson at heart, but always prided himself on outstanding customer service, which has left an incredible legacy in the instrumentation industry over a career spanning five decades.

Speaking of legacy, Doug leaves a sordid trail of pranks and practical jokes that will live on in infamy. Whether it was placing a fake Budgie in a tree, mortifying his sons with his ketchup-covered ‘severed thumb’ in a box on Halloween, or the legend of Johnny Clubfoot that petrified countless kids from venturing into the family basement, Doug was a jokester through and through. He loved making people laugh, so long as he was laughing the hardest!

We think Doug would have a laugh reading this. The countless belly laughs will continue, and the stories will echo for years to come. Doug would want us to laugh, remember the good times, and to use his Rolodex of practical jokes as often as possible. He would love nothing more than to see his handy work in action.

Rest easy Dad.

Per Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Doug’s Life will take place in the coming months, with details to follow.
