Obituary of Robert Ernest Gordon Purdy

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert (Rob) Ernest Gordon Purdy on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at the age of 53 years.

Rob was born on September 11, 1970, in Calgary, AB. He was a dynamic and passionate individual who left an unforgettable mark on everyone he met. He had an extraordinary ability to make others feel valued and his kindness was among his greatest traits.

Rob was a proud third-generation Calgarian who grew up in the vibrant community of Lakeview. His family was deeply involved in the neighbourhood, and he forged many lifelong friendships there. As a young boy, he delivered papers and loved playing sports, including hockey, soccer, golf, and lacrosse. Known for hosting epic parties, the Purdy home at “6907” became legendary among friends and neighbours, further cementing his connection to the community. Rob and his family even moved back to his childhood home in Lakeview, where they lived happily for several years.

Rob attended Central Memorial High School from 1985 to 1988, often saying he was, "Rockin' High School, Just Growing Up". During his time there, he was active on the student council and eventually served as President in his grade twelve year, as well as President of his class. Rob was academically gifted too, excelling in math and science. He was also a natural athlete who continued to thrive in sports throughout high school, particularly football, rugby, hockey and lacrosse.

Rob’s passion for sports grew and evolved as he helped coach power skating at the Glencoe Club, and worked as a groundskeeper for both the Calgary Canons’ baseball club and the Earl Grey golf course. Known for his signature style, he could often be seen in white Levi’s, a polo shirt, and snakeskin cowboy boots. Rob’s flair for fashion, always chic and on point, remained a hallmark throughout his life.

Robert graduated from the University of Calgary in 1993, with his Bachelor of Commerce degree and went on to obtain his level two CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation. He was a proud member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the Finance Management Group at the University.

Rob was a passionate leader and visionary in the investment world, known for his expertise, innovation and commitment to excellence. He had a distinguished career as an investment professional, beginning at RBC Dominion Securities, Canaccord Genuity and Peters & Co. before founding Purdy & Partners in 2008 and Aperion Fund in 2022.

Over his 30-year career, Rob left an indelible mark on the private equity and venture capital sectors. His specialties included early-stage venture capital, identifying growth companies, business and investment analysis and portfolio management. Rob was driven by his desire to build exceptional brands and foster growth in every venture he touched. He was renowned for his commitment to working with people, driving innovation and achieving excellence. Rob taught many people the importance of chasing what set his soul on fire and never settled for anything less.

Rob had a profound love for the outdoors, embracing activities such as hunting, fishing and biking. He had a special fondness for birds, dogs, as well as both days and evenings spent around the firepit. His passions led to countless memorable experiences with family and friends. Whether he was exploring nature or whipping up culinary masterpieces in the kitchen, Rob left a lasting impression with his creativity and flair. Those who enjoyed his renowned meals will always remember the enthusiasm and care he poured into every dish while his music played in the background. His love for cooking was something Rob learned firsthand at a young age from his beloved Uncle Roger, whose culinary talents were legendary. Rob’s distinctive style and lively spirit made every experience uniquely his own.

Rob never did anything halfway. He always went all out. Whether it was running the Las Vegas Marathon in 2001, competing in a Tough Mudder event in Las Vegas in 2013, or tackling the Canmore Half-Marathon, he approached every challenge with full commitment and enthusiasm.

Rob will be dearly missed by his family, friends and network of business colleagues who will remember him for his profound love for his family, his passion for business, and his remarkable resilience to keep moving forward, no matter the challenges he faced in life.

Rob is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Julia Purdy and their children, Spencer and Jessica. Rob was an incredibly proud father who cherished his family deeply.

Rob is also survived by his mother Barbara Ann (Williams) Purdy, his sisters, Caroline (Carey), Riley and Lindsay Bracko, Kellie (Ryan), Kelsey, Kayla, Connor (Jodi), and Cole Cartwright and his brother, Brad and his children, Isla, Fiana, and Torin Purdy.
