Obituary of DIPLOCK – Margaret Louise

1925 – 2011 Margaret passed away peacefully on April 9 at Southwood Hospice after a short battle with cancer. She was a small town girl, born in Girvin, Saskatchewan to a large family with 12 children. She met her husband, Gordon Diplock, a Brit stationed in North Battleford with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After their marriage, he returned to England with his unit. In 1944, with her infant daughter, Margaret sailed from New York in a convoy to join her best friend and partner in a marriage that lasted almost 58 years. She was a war bride “in reverse” and during her time in England, was a caring and compassionate nurse to many returning veterans. Margaret and Gordon returned to Canada in 1954, settling in Calgary in 1974, where Margaret worked as a business manager until she retired. Margaret was a remarkably strong, determined and courageous woman who in 2007, rebounded in six weeks from a car accident that broke both of her legs. Her recent fight against cancer was valiant. We will miss her strength, wisdom and, in particular, her smile. We’ll also miss her steak and kidney pudding. Margaret was pre-deceased by her parents and ten of her siblings. Her husband, Gordon, passed away in 2001. Left to mourn is her daughter, Margaret Rose (Melvin Brown) in PEI; her son, Gordon (Pamela Gaudette) in Calgary; her sister Eva (George Elliott) in Washington State; two grandchildren, five great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family extends our heartfelt thanks to Chrissie and the staff of Southwood Hospice for their sensitive and compassionate care during the last two months.
