Obituary of MAUGHAN – John Bohan

1925 – 2011 John “Jack” Maughan, 85, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2011. Jack was born in Lethbridge to Joseph and Helen Maughan. It was in Lethbridge that Jack met the love of his life Alice-Marie Irving. Jack and Alice-Marie were married for 59 years. Jack was passionate about his family and providing opportunities for their enrichment and enjoyment. An avid traveler, Jack made sure his family enjoyed many adventures to far off lands. The family happily enjoyed the last 40 years at their vacation home at Lake Windermere. Whether it was snow skiing or water skiing, golfing, skating or fishing, Jack made sure his family was able to partake in and enjoy a multitude of activities. Jack was actively involved in many religious, charitable and community associations. He was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church for many years and had served as head of the Parish Council. The Rotary Club was a very important part of Jack’s life, where he served as President and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. Jack was an ardent supporter in the founding of St. Mary’s University College. After serving for many years on the Board of Regents and Trustees of Gonzaga University, Jack was appointed Trustee Emeritus. Jack was involved with the Stampeder Football Club as Associate Director, supporter and fan and was a fixture for decades at Mewatta and McMahon Stadiums. Jack relished his time spent at The Glencoe Club, usually chasing the little white bird around the badminton court which he enjoyed well into his 70’s. He spent many days at the Calgary Golf and Country Club chasing the little white ball around the greens and through many sand traps. Jack delighted in countless lunches, parties and meetings at the Calgary Petroleum Club. Jack enjoyed a long and rewarding career in the oil and gas business, beginning in the Turner Valley Field when he was twelve years old, where he was a roustabout on drilling rigs operated by his Father and Uncle “By God” Bill Maughan. Jack later obtained his Masters in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. After training and working with the legendary John Arps in Tulsa and Dallas, Jack returned to Canada with Stanolind Oil/Amoco, where he was Chief Engineer during the development of the Pembina Oil Fields. Later Jack joined J.C. Sproule at Sproule Consulting as the firm’s first Petroleum Engineer and was integral in establishing Sproule as a leading worldwide consulting firm. After leaving Sproule in the 1960’s, Jack established his own consulting and independent oil and gas companies and was always a keen scientist, businessman and explorer. Jack drilled and developed oil and gas reserves throughout the United States and Canada and drilled several wildcat wells in the Canadian Territories and Alaska, but focused his efforts mostly in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Jack is survived by his loving wife , four sons and their children John (Elizabeth) Vincent and Jordan; Brett, Seth; Joseph (Janet); Michael (Maria) Sara-Ellyse; and two daughters Julia (Tim) Ben and Sam; and Paula (Lee) Max, Grace, Tilly, and Nick. Jack is also survived by his sister, Pat Matheson. He was predeceased by his brothers Bill and Joe, and his sister Marion Goddard. There are no words to express our sorrow, and how deeply we will miss this special man.
