The Dinning Family

The members of the Samaritan Club were deeply saddened to learn of Joey’s passing. She joined our group in 1942 and became an Honorary Member in 2002. She was much valued, working hard so we could provide assistance to those Calgarians with need of help during a time of hardship.

I just heard of your Mom’s passing and am so sorry to hear that she is gone. She was a wonderful lady right to the end, always so kind, and bursting with pride about her boys and the rest of the family. She was also a dear friend to my mother, going back to the days in university, the years in Elbow Park, and then later sharing a table at the Fountains and meeting in the corridors of the Beverly. She shone with a lovely light and will be sorely missed.

Bob, John, Jim and Families,We were saddened by the news of your mother’s-grandmother’s passing. Joey was a special lady in our lives and she will hold a place in our hearts forever. May you celebrate her life, as you mourn her loss and remember her love.

Mrs Dinning would stand at the front door of her home and wave goodbye when Bob and our group would leave for University in Missoula. That is how far back Joey goes in my life. Many years passed and once again Joey became my neighbour in Rideau Towers – where she would wave to me to come in and share the news of the day, (and the occasional cheerio). Joey was always so elegant, charming and also very funny. She will be missed and remembered by so many and that is such a good tribute to such a wonderful person.

We were sorry to hear that Joey passed. She was such an interesting lady. I was glad to have called her (from the Calgary airport) just after she sold her home and moved. Jack was Mike’s first boss with The Distillers Company but more than a boss he was a good friend and mentor who shared so many good stories and always led with a sense of fun and humor. Dear Dinning Family,

When Judy Williams introduced me to Joey the night Jim threw his hat into the political ring I remember thinking, “This is a woman to be reckoned with.” How right I was.

Your beautifully written obituary described her perfectly and is a lasting tribute to her.

I will always remember Joey for her impeccable style, her classic page boy, the art of her dining room chairs, her crust-trimmed chicken salad sandwiches with almonds, her love of ‘prezzies’ and her proud devotion to her family.

The two of us comprised a formidable ‘decorating committee’ at Devonshire House. There is nothing more political than a condominium board but with Joey’s charm and political savvy we managed to get the job done…with style!

I missed her terribly when she moved from Devonshire House but I cherish the time we spent together. She was truly splendid.
