Obituary of GOMYO – Kuranosuke Kurano

1920 –2011 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kurano, treasured husband of Keiko and his children, Ikuo of Osaka, Japan and Yoshiko of Calgary. He is sadly missed by daughter-in-law Masako of Japan and son-in-law Doug of Calgary. His grandchildren, Jun, Kumi, Emily Maya and Ben Kenji miss him dearly. He is remembered for his kindness, patience, love of mountains and animals, and scholarly pursuits. Kurano was born on May 4, 1920 in Gosen, Niigata prefecture, Japan. He was exempt from fighting in the war due to his high academic achievements and attended Ryojun Institute of Technology in Manchuria from 1941-1943, graduating with a degree in engineering. He returned to Japan to continue post-graduate studies in mine safety at Hokkaido University and later served as an assistant to a professor in the Faculty of Engineering until 1947. His thesis was recognized by the Mitsubishi Company and he was hired by Mitsubishi Mining Company in Tokyo. He married his life long companion, Keiko, in June 1951. In 1955, he was sent to Germany to study German mining at Aachen Technical University and to serve as the representative of Japan Coal Association. He was responsible for bringing many highly skilled Japanese staff to Germany. Kurano and Keiko travelled extensively around Europe, making lasting friendships. In 1968, he made a life changing decision to move his family to Alberta. He worked as a senior mining engineer for several companies, again bringing skilled Japanese staff to Alberta mines. He retired in the early 1980s, living the last few years in Calgary, surrounded by family.
