Obituary of ALLAN – John Donald

1916 – 2010 On the evening of Wednesday, December 8th, 2010, Dad peacefully closed his eyes for the last time. He was a true gentleman who loved, and was loved, and will be greatly missed. Dad lived his early years in Edmonton with his parents John and Gladys and his brother Ed. His love for the outdoors and his passion for geology were inherited from his father, Dr. John A. Allan, for whom Mount Allan is named. He obtained degrees from the University of Alberta (BSc Engineering), Queens (MSc Geology) and MIT (PhD Geology). He served as an officer with the Royal Canadian Engineers during WWII then joined the Manitoba Mines Branch in 1946 and it was there he met Mom. They married in 1951 and spent 59 wonderful years together. Dad joined California Standard (Chevron) in 1951 where he worked until his retirement in 1981. Dad developed many life long friendships from his time spent in the oil and gas industry. He enjoyed all outdoor activities and freely gave his time to many charitable organizations, his church and community and was especially proud of his time spent as a volunteer at the Calgary Food Bank. Dad’s greatest joy was his family and each of them held a special place in his heart. He is survived by his loving wife Reta (nee Baldwin), children Judy (Tim) Kealty, Diane (Don) Stewart, Bruce (Jane) Allan and Gord (Sue) Allan, and grandchildren Allison and Meredith Kealty, Gord (Nicole), Tom and Pam Stewart, Mark and Leslie Allan, and Sarah and Chad Allan. Dad is also survived by his brother Ed (Pat) of Victoria, B.C. and their children John, Brenda and Gary and their families as well as the large Baldwin clan of Manitoba. We will always cherish the frequent laughter-filled family times spent together. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at the Beverly Centre Glenmore for caring for Dad so well; always with kindness and dignity. We extend special gratitude to Maricel and Mae for guiding us through the past difficult year.
