Obituary of MACKID – Benton Stewart

September 14, 1912 – October 10, 2010 Calgary lost a native son when Benton Stewart Mackid passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at the age of 98 years. Benton was born in Calgary and attended University School (Victoria), McGill University and the University of Alberta. He was VP & Director of Reed Shaw Osler (precursor to Reed Stenhouse Inc), Past President of the Ranchmen’s Club, a past Associate Director of the Calgary Stampede, President of the Calgary Branch (Chinook County Historical Society), Historical Society of Alberta (1959 to 1962), and President of the Insurance Agents Association of Alberta (1954). Benton was a long time fan of the Calgary Stampeders and followed the team until his passing. Benton married Jean Irving (Calgary) in 1937. She passed away in 1959; he then married Doris Forbes McKeen in 1962. He loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures all over the globe, as well as winters in Mexico and later in Palm Desert. After several years in Calgary, he and Doris moved to Vancouver Island. He will be remembered as being the consummate gentleman with a passionate love of the outdoors. Benton had a keen sense of humour, high degree of integrity and generosity of spirit. Benton is survived by his son Court (Linda) Mackid of Calgary; daughter Corliss Ashton-Mackid of Dead Man’s Flats; step-children, Daphne McKeen of Victoria, BC and Mimi McKeen-Cooke of Vancouver, BC; grandchildren, Jennifer and Christian Mackid and Kristina Carter, Orejona Ashton and Jonathan-David Ashton, Toby Ward and Gus Ward; and great-grandchildren, Rachel and Caroline Ward and Gabriel Martinez. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Ludwig Stewart Mackid, MD and Ada Eugina Hammond; brother Flt/Lt John Goodsir Mackid, DFC; and wives Jean MacBeath (nee Irving) and Doris Irene (nee Forbes). Benton’s family would like to thank the caregivers and nursing staff at Carewest Garrison Green in Calgary, and extend a special thank you to the staff of Foothills Medical Centre, Unit 46, for all of their special attention to Benton.
