Obituary of JACOB – Jeffrey Carl

October 29, 1942 – August 6, 2010 Jeffrey Carl Jacob, beloved husband and eternal companion of Lynne, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 6, 2010 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was dearly loved by family and friends, and will be missed greatly. Jeff was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Salt Lake City, UT and Rexburg, ID. He served a mission in Scotland for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Jeff earned degrees from Brigham Young University (B.A.) and Syracuse University (Ph.D.) and performed his doctoral research in Guatemala City. He moved to Canada with his young family in 1974 when he joined the University of Calgary as a professor and sociologist in the Faculty of Education. He taught for 36 years a variety of courses designed to transform teachers into leaders. Most recently he personally developed and conducted, with great passion, a seminar on spiritual leadership that greatly influenced both the hearts and minds of his students. He was a long time member of his LDS congregation, where he served as Bishop for several years in the 1980’s. In 1997 Jeff organized the project, carried out in his local congregation, of collecting food for the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank. This effort grew over the years to include all LDS congregations in the city and has become known as the annual City-Wide Food Drive. This initiative has grown exponentially and saw, in 2008, a new world record achieved for food collected in one day ($1M+). He and Lynne also organized and served with their congregation regularly at St. Mary’s Feed the Hungry. Jeff always made time for his family, and one of his favourite activities in recent years was taking photos of his family, especially of his grandchildren, and making photo books and slide shows. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. His relationships meant more to him than anything in this world. Jeff leaves a legacy of loving kindness and a yearning to serve others. We will always remember his constant belief in the power of individuals to be transformed spiritually, and his unwavering testimony in the unconditional love of our Heavenly Father. The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and medical staff of both Unit 47, and the Carewest Sarcee Hospice for the care they gave Jeff. He leaves his wife of 44 years, eight children, Tim (Cecilia Flores), Amy, Annie (Peter) Rojas, Stephanie (Dustin) Aleksiuk, Joey, Rob, Chris, Maria (Mike) Lee, and eleven amazing grandchildren. He also leaves his brothers Chris, John, Juan, Abraham, and sisters Claire, Ellen and Laura. Jeff was predeceased by his parents, Ruth and Carl. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, August 10, 2010 at McInnis and Holloway’s Crowfoot Chapel, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W. from 7:00 until 8:30p.m., and Wednesday morning prior to the funeral service starting at 10:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held for Jeff at the Bow Valley Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2526 24 Avenue N.W. (corner of Crowchild Trail and 24 Avenue N.W.) Calgary, AB on Wednesday August 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com If friends so desire, donations may be made in Jeff’s name to the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, www.foodbank.com or St. Mary’s Feed the Hungry, www.rcdiocese-calgary.ab.ca/feedthehungry.
