Obituary of HENDRY – Sophie Teresa

August 30, 1952 – June 2, 2010 On Wednesday, June 2, 2010 Sophie Teresa Hendry passed away with her family at her side. Left to mourn are her dear children, Sean Gellatly, Chris Hendry (Amber), Angela Hendry(Rylan); twin sister Helen Rzeszutek (Brent); brother Ed Rzeszutek (Linda) of Winnipeg and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Wesley Hendry in 2004. Sophie was born in Beausejour, MB on August 30, 1952 and first lived where the Rzeszutek family had settled on a nearby farm in the tiny hamlet of Julius. In 1959 the family moved to Winnipeg where Sophie completed her high school education and one year in the Faculty of Physical Education at the University of Manitoba. She was an excellent student and outstanding track and field athlete. During those years she worked at Winnipeg’s renowned Jeanne’s Bakery. After her first marriage, Sophie and Sean moved to Calgary in 1978 to courageously start a new life and where she met and married Wes, the love of her life. They later operated IESC, a company that primarily served the oil industry until 2002. For the past seven years, Sophie has worked at Garden Retreat, a garden centre in Calgary. She loved her job as a grower and all the responsibilities that were asked of her. Her loyalty to Garden Retreat and its customers was boundless. She frequently expressed her affection for her colleagues and especially Stacey and his wonderful family. Sophie attended St. Gerard’s Catholic Church where she made many friends. She deeply appreciated everyone who came to see her at Foothills Hospital and Southwood Hospice. Sophie’s family wishes to thank everyone who has been so supportive during her brief battle with cancer, especially long-time friend, Pat Landry, Dr. Heng, the staff at Foothills Hospital and Southwood Hospice, Father Bogdan and so many loving friends at St. Gerard’s Parish; Stacey Laursen, his family and dear friends at Garden Retreat, family friend, Adam Davidson, Sally Jensen and Sophie’s kind neighbours. Sophie wished to be remembered in these words by Erma Bombeck: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me’.” Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Cremation with interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery will take place at a later date.
