Obituary of FAHRNER – Mildred

March 15, 1920 – June 1, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mildred (Mickie) Fahrner on Tuesday June 1, 2010 at the age of 90 years. Mickie was born in Northumberland, England, the daughter of Daniel Clarke and Eileen Stevenson. She attended Cambridge University and studied psychology under the eminent Professor Bartlett. She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) at the start of World War II in 1939, achieving the rank of Sergeant. Mickie was responsible for the psychological testing of Air Force recruits arriving in the UK from Commonwealth and Allied Countries and assigning them to their duties. During this time, she met and fell in love with a Canadian soldier, and on June 4, 1943 she married Philip Marsh Scott of Kneehill Valley, AB in Edinburgh, Scotland. Sadly, Philip was killed at the Battle of Ortona, Italy in December 1943. Mickie came to Canada in 1944 toward the end of the WWII, via a convoy ship loaded with soldiers and POWs, eluding German U-boats as they crossed the North Atlantic. She settled on the Scott Family farm in Kneehill Valley. In 1948, she met John Campbell Fahrner, of Banff, Alberta through a shared interest in the showing of Collie dogs. Cam and Mickie were married on July 5, 1949 and spent their honeymoon at Lake O’Hara; which became one of their favorite places to hike and they returned regularly for many years. Cam worked for Calgary Power (TransAlta) and the family lived in a number of beautiful locations, including Ghost Dam, Seebe, the Kananaskis and Spray Lakes; finally settling in Calgary in 1964. Mickie was involved in volunteer activities throughout her life, including Pastoral Care and the CNIB (reading for visually impaired U of C students). She enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with her four grand-daughters. In the last few years she was able to realize her life-long interest in travel by going with her daughter on several cruises in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean; and made numerous trips to Tofino, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, where she loved to walk the beaches. Mickie will be lovingly remembered by her friends and family; daughter Pamela (Ted) Simper of Okotoks; son Ian (Merry Jill Milne) Fahrner of Calgary; four granddaughters ; Jennifer and Meghan Simper and Alissa and Jacqueline Fahrner; her sister Esme Palmer and the Clarke Family (England), the Scott Family and the Corbett Family. She was pre-deceased by Cam, her beloved husband of almost 60 years, and her brother George Clarke (England). Mickie will be remembered for her zest for life, strong spirit, determination, sense of fun and loving nature – she was an inspiration to all who knew her.
