Obituary of HAJAS – Gabor

December 10, 1934 – March 19, 2010 Gabor Hajas of Calgary passed away on Friday, March 19, 2010 at the age of 75 years. Gabor was born in Hungary and immigrated to Canada in 1956. He moved to St. Jean, Quebec where he met Marie in 1958 and became a stepfather to Paul, Norma and Marcel. Soon after Carol, Joe and Rene were born to make the family complete. Gabor was a taper by trade and moved his family throughout Canada and the United States. In the early 1970’s, the Hajas family settled in Calgary. Marcel introduced Gabor to Reid’s Auction in the 1980’s and he caught the auction bug and purchased Reid’s Auction in 1985 and spent the next twenty five years in the business with his sons Joe and Rene. Gabor loved talking to people; he was often seen on his stool at the front door of the auction on sale day where he met many customers who became good friends. He enjoyed driving to Arizona and spending time at his home there, reading about the “fountain of youth” and new herb remedies. He took much pride in telling people about his “zapping machine” and how he could cure them. Some of Gabor’s greatest moments were spending time with his grand children. His weaknesses were Frank Sisson’s and Shanks Sports Bar. He loved flirting with the waitresses that always made a fuss over him. Gabor’s biggest challenge in the end was realizing that he would not live forever and that death was inevitable. He is in a better place, and we hope there will be a horse track and a black jack table there. Gabor is survived by his children Paul, Norma, Marcel, Carol, Joe and Rene and his twelve grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Sunday , March 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
