ALGER Harry Elliott

Obituary of ALGER – Harry Elliott

April 8, 1924 – January 27, 2010 It is with mixed emotions that we announce the peaceful passing of our dad, Harry Elliott Alger, at the Beverly Care Centre, Calgary, AB on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, with his dear wife Norma near his side, as well as his caregiver Grace. We are happy to know he is in a better place. Dad was born in Prelate, SK on April 8, 1924. He was raised and educated in Turner Valley and at the age of 18 he began working on the rigs at Norman Wells. This was short lived as he enlisted to become a wireless air gunner in the R.C.A.F. Upon being demobilized in 1945, he spent five years with Royalite rough necking. In 1950, Dad and his brother-in-law Dan Widney formed the Widney Oilwell Drilling and Servicing Company Ltd. which they owned and operated for thirty plus years. Dad was a people person and devoted countless hours to various organizations throughout his life. He served as Devon’s Lion’s Club President (1959), exulted ruler of the Okotoks Elks (1975), Potentate of Al Azhar Temple (1976) and Master of the Corinthian Lodge (1983). One of his greatest honours was when he became the Imperial Chaplain for the Shrine (1989). Prior to his retirement he entered politics and became a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Highwood constituency (1982-1989). Dad enjoyed and embraced all aspects of life. He was a remarkable man, capable of balancing many balls at the same time; always maintaining a positive disposition while accomplishing his goals. He loved living in the country on his farm which he fondly named “Southern Comfort”. Whether curling, golfing, placing a good bet on his shared racehorses, boating at Windermere, dancing, or travelling on a cruise ship, Dad had a smile on his face. His infectious personality and ability to entertain people was a gift to all who knew him. Dad was our singer, our spiritual guide, and all our family and friends enjoyed many joyous occasions under his leadership. He lived, loved, laughed, prayed, sang his tunes and expressed his message far and wide. Such a gracious man! Dad is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Norma; his children, Stephen, Suzanne (Wayne), Alan (Vera); his grandchildren, Daniel, Christopher, Angela, Katie, Cory, and Faith; three great-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Danny, and brothers Gordon and Ross. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family in a Celebration of Harry’s Life at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club (west on Hwy. 22X, left at Priddis Greens Drive) on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 2:00 PM. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Our family would like to thank our many friends who have visited and shown support to Mom and Dad throughout these past several years. We know Dad made a valiant effort to live life to the fullest despite his many health issues; however he was ready for the angels and “That Lucky Old Sun”.
