Obituary of HASDELL – Jill Louise

August 14, 1950 – December 31, 2009 It is with broken hearts that we announce Jill’s passing after a five-year battle against breast cancer. The dignity, grace, and tenacity with which Jill fought her illness was an extension of the same spirit with which she lived her life. She has been an inspiration and support to her husband of thirty-four years David, children Rebecca, Vanessa and Benjamin, friends in Canada and England, former colleagues, and the many people whom she encountered on her journey. Jill’s legacy will continue in her children, who Jill nurtured and encouraged to live lives marked by the compassion and adventure that she modeled. Jill was born in Northampton, England, where she trained as a registered nurse before moving to Canada with David in 1977. Jill and David settled in Calgary, AB, where Jill worked as a nurse for the next twenty years. She embodied the selfless nature of her career, and even in her illness, family and friends encountered the generosity of her time, attention and care. Along with the endless love invested into her family, Jill found joy in the award winning garden that she built with David. Jill is survived by her extended family in England – sisters Linda (Bob) and Anita (John), father-in-law Roger, brother-in-law Dennis (Sue), sisters-in-law Catriona (Mick) and Nikki, nieces Hayley (Phil), Jessica, Hollie, Harriet, Emily, Samantha, Georgina and Alexandra, nephews Christian, Lawrence and Joseph, great-niece Mya, and great-nephews Jamie and Luke. Jill was predeceased by her parents (Robert and Iris) and her mother-in-law Joan. Jill and David built an extended “family” in their adopted home in Canada and have shared their life in Calgary with dear friends Pat and Richard and their children Ruth (Graham), Jamie and Tom. Jill’s family would like to thank the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic and Agapé Hospice, who gave her strength when it was time to fight, and then gave her peace when it was time to let go. A special thank you goes to Jill’s team at the Tom Baker – Debbie Reinheimer, Dr. Alexander Patterson, Dr. Leslie Coulter, Dr. Tara Pickering and Dr. Linda Fong. Jill found support in B.E.S.T, her support group at the Tom Baker, who will miss the “Jill flair”, and the “Boosem Buddies” Support Group at Deer Park United Church. Funeral Services will be held at Deer Park United Church (77 Deer Point Road S.E.) on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Agapé Hospice, 1302 – 8 Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1B8 Telephone: (403) 282-6588.
