Obituary of POTTER – Muriel Doris

December 28, 1920 – December 24, 2009 Muriel Doris Potter (nee Parrack) passed away at her home in Calgary on December 24, 2009, at 88 years of age, with her devoted husband Ernest at her side. Muriel was born on December 28, 1920 in Kent, England, to a family of second-generation flag-makers. She was the eldest of five children and worked in the family business making flags for many clients, including the English Royal family. During this time, she developed her artistic skills which would blossom into a cherished hobby – oil painting. Many of her paintings were exhibited and sold in Montreal’s art community. Muriel met and married Ernest while he was stationed in England during World War II. Muriel served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service of the British Army. When the war ended, she immigrated to Canada as a war bride and, with her young family, settled in Laval West, a suburb of Montreal. During this time, she cared for several children of neighbouring families and also worked in the Occupational Therapy Department of the Jewish General Convalescent Hospital in Chomedy, Quebec. Muriel and Ernest retired to Oxford, Nova Scotia. During their retirement, they enjoyed extended annual vacations in Barbados. Muriel loved basking in the beautiful sunshine, floating in the turquoise waters and socializing with their many wonderful island friends. Fifteen years ago, Muriel and Ernest moved to Calgary to be near their growing family. Muriel pursued her interests in painting, knitting and crocheting and gardening. She always had a special place for animals in her life and there have always been faithful dogs in the Potter household. Muriel will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Ernest Potter, her dedicated husband of sixty seven years. Muriel is also survived by her children Barry and Keith Potter (Sandra Fitzgibbon); her grandchildren Christopher (Holly) and Shelley Potter (Katherine Pratt); great-grandchildren Chloe, Natalie, Brooke and Tucker Potter; and soon to be great-grandson Jack Potter-Pratt. Her greatest love and source of joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will forever carry her memory in their hearts. Muriel was predeceased by her daughter-in-law and committed caregiver, Diana Potter, beloved wife and companion of Barry Potter, in October 2008.
