Obituary of Clarence Hugh DUNBAR

October 5th, 1920 to December 23rd, 2009 Clarence Hugh Dunbar beloved husband of Jean Dunbar of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 at the age of 89 years. Clarence was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta, as the youngest of five children to William and Frieda Dunbar (nee Sorge). He worked on the family farm and ranch, moving to High River in 1934. He then moved to Calgary in 1940, and enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army in 1941. He saw duty overseas with the Governor General’s Horse Guards in Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, and Holland before being discharged in Canada in 1946. Upon discharge, he returned to Calgary to work at Kenway Saddlery before joining The Calgary Herald in 1948, where he became Foreman of the Mailing Room, retiring in 1984. Over the years, Clarence enjoyed helping family, friends, and others as a handyman, and could repair almost anything. He loved to work with and drive classic and antique automobiles, was a self-taught carpenter, machinist, welder, and electric motor repairman. He was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed watching baseball, football, and hockey. After living in a tent during his military service, he decided a recreational vehicle was much more comfortable, and spent many years enjoying travel vacations in Western Canada and the United States. He remained a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion, enjoying the camaraderie of friends, and dancing each weekend. Clarence faced many challenges throughout his life, with courage and quiet dignity. He is survived by his loving wife Jean of sixty-one years, sons Craig (Michelle) and Terry (Karen), grandchildren Laura, Carolyn, Meghan, Kimberley, Connor, and Elaina, and nieces Patricia, Luella, and Carol. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret (Edward Jasman), and brothers David (Irene), William (Doris), and Allan. The family wishes to thank the many physicians who assisted Clarence, especially Dr. Peter Thornton, Dr. Merril Knudtson, and Dr. John Van Olm. Jean and the family also appreciate the efforts of the many staff at the Colonel Belcher Veteran’s Care Centre, Lancaster House, for their dedicated care and compassion.
