Obituary of HAMILTON – William Douglas

July 12, 1930 – December 11, 2009 William Douglas (Doug) Hamilton, born July 12, 1930 in Edmonton, AB, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2009, in Calgary, AB after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Margaret Eileen Hamilton; his children, Nancy Richardson, Deborah Hamilton and Doug Hamilton; and his five grandchildren, Brett Hugh, Jenna Andrews, Cole Richardson, Chad Andrews, and Kyle Hamilton. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas Fredrick Hamilton and Hilda Edith Hamilton (nee Caslake). Athletics were very important to Doug throughout his life. He enjoyed golf, swimming, tennis, and basketball. Doug was most proud of his athletic accomplishment as a member of the Golden Bears basketball team, at the University of Alberta. He earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1959, and went on to a successful and fulfilling career as an Engineer in the Petroleum industry both in Canada and abroad. Doug spent many years with Pan Geo Atlas Corporation (Baker Hughes), in Canada, USA, France, Algeria, and Tunisia. Subsequently he moved on to work for PanCanadian Petroleum Ltd. (EnCana) in Calgary, where he contributed to several key projects for the company, over his twenty-one years of service prior to retiring in 1992. Doug also contributed to the community, most notably by spearheading the development of the Family Leisure Centre (Trico Centre) which introduced the first indoor wave pool to Calgary.
