Obituary of DE PAOLI

June 29, 1916 – September 13, 2009 Pierina’s 93-year journey on Earth ended on Sunday, September 13, 2009 after a short, valiant struggle with cancer. Pierina Roman was born on June 29, 1916 in Arzene, Pordenone, Italy. She married Gino De Paoli on November 28, 1936 and resided in San Lorenzo, Pordenone for the next fifteen years. In December 1951, she left Italy with her two sons and travelled to Calgary where she was reunited with her husband who had immigrated to Canada the previous year seeking a better life for his family. Her pride and joy was her enormous garden which she tended daily until the age of 92, at which time her health began to fail. Pierina was a loving and devoted wife, mother, nonna and bisnonna, and her memory will remain in our hearts forever. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends, especially her sister Nives, and her life-long friend Pia Pittana, with whom she communicated almost daily. Pierina will be lovingly remembered by her son and daughter–in-law, Lino and Patricia De Paoli; grandsons, Dean and Jim (Cindy) De Paoli; and great-grandsons, Roman and Mario De Paoli, all of Calgary. She is also survived by her sister Nives (Dino) Nocent, and her family of Sault Ste. Marie, ON, as well as many relatives in Italy. Pierina will be laid to eternal rest together with her beloved husband Gino who predeceased her on March 18, 2001, and her eldest son Mario who passed away from cancer at the age of 19 on April 6, 1958. She was also predeceased by brothers, Gino and Ciso Roman; and sister Rosina Venier in Italy. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Sosnowski and the staff of Forest Grove Care Centre where Pierina resided for the past year. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Italian and English Catholic Church (1714 – 14th Avenue N.E.) on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
