Mary Ungar

Obituary of Mary Campbell Ungar

Mary Ungar, our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully in Foothills Hospital after a long and brave battle with cancer. The youngest of five children, Mary was born and raised in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, where she began her teaching career. In 1955 she moved to Quebec, eventually settling in Montreal, where she went to Sir George Williams (now Concordia) University and earned her BA in 1961. During this time she met the love of her life, Andrew, and married in 1960. She continued to teach in Montreal until parenting became her full-time occupation. In 1980, the family packed up and moved to Calgary. Family was paramount to Mary, but running a close second was her love of buying and selling antiques and collectables, and she spent many a happy hour looking for (and often finding) treasures in unlikely places. She also liked to travel, play bridge, solve her daily crossword and decodaquote, and debate the issues of the day with friends and family. Left behind to mourn her passing is husband Andrew (whom sometimes she called “Andriskam” in his native Hungarian); son Richard with wife Karen and grandsons Noah and Aaron; son Garnet with wife Gina and grandson Samuel; sister Vivian (Creaser) and brothers Carl and Clyde Wyman. Mary was predeceased by her sister Dorothy (Fairchild). A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church (924 Heritage Drive S.W., T2V 2W7, phone 403-259-4080) on Friday, July 31, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations are made directly to St. Andrew’s United Church. In living memory of Mary Ungar, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.
