Obituary of George Frederick Marks

George Frederick Marks died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving and devoted family, on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at the age of 86 years. George lived a full, and generous life as a husband, father, grandfather, musician, collector, photographer, sports car enthusiast and hobbyist. Above all, George was a loving husband to Phyllis for 48 years and a wonderful father to Brenda and Dave. George was born in Edmonton on May 11, 1923. While at school, George discovered his passion for music with the Edmonton School Boy’s Band. Following high school, he enlisted in the RCAF, and served in Ontario, Newfoundland and England through to the end of the war. George returned to school and graduated in 1950 with a commerce degree from the University of Alberta. George began his career with GMAC Finance prior to joining Cyanamid Canada where he spent 34 years as an award winning salesman. He made many life-long friends on the road throughout Western Canada, and retired in 1987. Music continued to be a big part of his life, playing clarinet and saxophone in the Calgary Concert Band for many years. He was an avid collector and at one time had Western Canada’s largest antique camera collection. He also won numerous awards for his photography. George had many passions in his life, but none greater than his family. George is survived by his loving wife Phyllis, daughter Brenda (Jeff Johnston), son David (Nancy Dilts), three wonderful grandchildren in Kelsey, Lauren, and Hunter, and his sister Helen (Doug MacLean). He was predeceased by sisters Irene and Alberta, and his brother Jim. George will be remembered by all who knew him for his good nature, easy laugh, many jingles , sense of fun, and abundant love.
