Obituary of Roy Boulton Brookes

Roy, a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness at the age of 83 years. Roy was born in Lethbridge, AB but, was raised in the Fort Macleod area living on an L.N.I.D. farm. After graduating from High School he joined the Armed Forces in WWII in Canada. After the war he graduated from Garbutts Business College in Lethbridge, he then moved to Calgary to pursue his lifetime career in the investment business. Roy worked for Royal Securities, Merril-Lynch and then, with Wood-Gundy until his retirement. Roy was well-known and respected in the business community for his integrity. Having enjoyed his youth in the Boy Scout movement as a Cub and Scout, he spent over 50 years volunteering for Scouts Canada in many capacities, the highlight being National President from 1982 – 1984. The Scout Motto “Be Prepared” was upheld throughout his life. Roy was a past president of the Calgary Gyro Club, enjoyed playing golf as a member of Canyon Meadows, fishing, travelling and winters in Indio, California. He was a “country boy” at heart and he spent many happy days in the country with his buddies hunting upland game birds. The “Shack” at Patricia, AB could tell many stories. Roy’s fondest memories were those of his family. Roy is survived by his loving wife of twelve days short of sixty years Margaret (Peggy); his children, Janice (Dwayne) and Richard (Dawn); grandchildren Margaret (Michael) Kelbert and Penny Walker and great grandchildren David, Sammuel and Amelia Kelbert; his sisters Audrey Kneale (Harry) of Sechelt, B.C. and Barbara Brookes of Calgary and many extended family. Roy was predeceased by his parents Walter and Bertha Brookes. “A loved one from us has gone, a voice we love is stilled, a place is vacant in our home, which never will be filled.” Funeral Services will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church (903 – 75 Avenue S.W.) on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
