Obituary of Nell Cunes
It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Petronella (Nell) Rosina Cunès at the age of 94 years.
Nell was born in Rotterdam, Holland on June 28, 1914 to Egbert and Hillegonda (Keller) van Dijk. Nell met the love of her life and future husband, Johannes Willem (Bill) Cunès, at a youth church service when she was sixteen. They were married, by proxy, after Bill finished his Mechanical Engineering studies and he left Holland to work for Royal Dutch Shell in Venezuela. Nell joined Bill in Venezuela in 1939. In 1952, Nell and Bill moved their family to Calgary where Bill worked for many years in the oil industry.
Nell and Bill had four children, Emma (David) Harris, Bill (Ginger) Cunès, Bob (Leigh) Cunès, and Hanna (Doug Simpson) Cunès. Nell leaves to mourn seven grandchildren, Julie (Jerald Fast) Harris, Neil (Margot) Harris, Erin (Jonothan Mossop) Cunès, Dr. Jill (Sanjay Kumar) Cunès, Polly (Bryan Moody) Cunès, Christopher Cunès, and Matthew Cunès. She will be greatly missed by her four much loved great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Rachel Fast, Annabel Mossop, and Saumya Kumar. Nell also leaves her dear sister Wilhelmina (Miep) Paardekooper as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Holland. Nell was predeceased by her husband Bill; her parents; and her brother Egbert van Dijk.
Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel at Grace Presbyterian Church (1009 – 15th Avenue S.W.) on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family greatly appreciates the gentle, loving care given Nell by emergency personnel, as well as the staff of Unit 82 at Rockyview General Hospital, especially the kindness and compassion of Dr. Shillington and nurse Mel. We would also like to thank the Rev. Victor Kim and Margot Kellough for their kind support. Flowers gratefully declined.
