Obituary of Thor Forseth

Thor Forseth of Calgary passed away peacefully at Bow Crest Care Centre on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at the age of 92 years. Thor was born on the family farm near Sexmith, AB. At age nineteen he began working as a grain buyer in Hines Creek and then Sexsmith. Thor joined the Army to serve three years in R.C.E.M.E. in Kingston, ON. Afterwards, he assumed the International Harvester Implement and Truck dealership in Peace River. During those years he served in civic affairs including Chamber of Commerce, town councillor and mayor, PM. of Masonic Lodge, Rotary, and Pres. UMA. In 1967 Thor and Ruth moved to Calgary, a city he so loved, to begin a career in Real Estate. Thor was an ardent advocate of better transportation throughout Alberta by serving on the Board of the Trans Canada Highway West twinning and to have the Trans Canada Trail completed coast to coast. He was also Pres. of North Calgary Business Association and PP of North Star Chapter of OES. Thor will be remembered for his integrity, generosity, kindness, faith and a family man whom we loved and cherished. Thor leaves to mourn, his daughter Melba Jean (Ron) Verkland and son Gerald; grandchildren, Debbie Ashton and Brent (Marla) Verkland; great-grandchildren Amber, Courtney, Shane and Thomas; sisters, Amy Sawatsky of Ladner, BC, and Elizabeth Larson of Edmonton. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth in April 2004 and brothers Bert, Keith, Marvin and sisters, Edna Benterud, Lillian Liland and Castella Remple. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, May 9, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Rockyview Garden of Peace.
