Obituary of Mathias Kurtz

Mathias Anthony (Matt) Kurtz, beloved father of Linda Kurtz of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at the age of 91 years. Matt was born on December 23, 1916 in Burdett, AB. He farmed on the family homestead in the Burdett area. In 1940, Matt moved to Calgary and soon became employed with the CPR at the Palliser Hotel. He held several positions with the company and eventually retired in 1982 as Controller. Matt married Kay Stuber in 1948, who predeceased him in 1985. Matt was a member of the Stampede City Chorus in Calgary and the Desert Aires Barbershop Chorus in Phoenix, AZ. He also enjoyed gardening, especially producing tomatoes. Besides his loving daughter Linda, Matt is also survived by his sister, Sister Theresa Kurtz of Antigonish, NS; his dear friend Lorraine Egglestone of Calgary; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends and Kay’s family. Besides his wife, Matt was predeceased by two brothers and four sisters. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S “Chapel of the Bells” (2720 Centre Street North) on Monday, April 7, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (640 – 19th Avenue N.W.) on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 11 a.m. Graveside Service in St. Joseph’s Section at Queen’s Park Cemetery on Wednesday, April 9 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
