Obituary of Lydia Michel

MICHEL – Lydia (nee Luft) 1913 – 2006 Lydia Michel, of Calgary, passed away on Friday, July 7, 2006, at the Fanning Centre at the age of 92 years. Lydia was born at the Calgary General Hospital on September 2, 1913 to German Russian immigrants, Henry and Mary (nee Befus) Luft and lived in Calgary most of her life. She attended Stanley Jones school, often remembering how she had to walk up the hill to the school from her home in Bridgeland. The family attended St. John Lutheran Church. In the early 1920’s, her family moved to a farm located close to Carstairs, AB. Lydia and her sister Emma went to school in Carstairs. She received her High School diploma in 1928 and also that year was confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church in Calgary. The family returned to Calgary in 1940 when her mother passed away. Lydia worked at various jobs in Calgary but mostly stayed at home looking after Emma who had multiple sclerosis until Emma was to disabled to handle and went to permanently stay in a nursing home. In April, 1951, Lydia married George Michel, who was also a German Russian immigrant. Together they raised a family in Bridgeland. In 1999 after she broke her hip, Lydia moved to the Edgemont Retirement Centre. In 2002 she moved to the Whitehorn Retirement Centre where she resided until a fall in April, at which time she moved to the Fanning Centre. In her later years mom became very hard of hearing but was always smiling and ready to laugh at anything. Her husband, family and faith were everything to her. Lydia is survived by her son Edward (Debra) and daughter Marlene (Don Mosimann); a granddaughter Tina (Trevor Dahl), grandson Christopher (Tanya) Michel; great-granddaughters, Joscelyn and Cassandra Dahl and Maykayla and Kaleigha Michel. Lydia was predeceased by her husband George in 1986, her parents Henry (1972) and Mary (1940), as well as her siblings, Henry, Mary, Pauline, Leahand Emma Funeral Services will be held at St. John Lutheran Church (204 – 6A Street N.E.) on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor, Arnold Alksne, Presider.
