Obituary of Marjorie Elizabeth Oxendale

Our mother did not go gently into the night. She burned and raved at the close of her day. She raged against the dying of the light. She is now finally resting in her true home. She died as she had lived, with dignity and determination. Although she was severely incapacitated with dementia for the last few years, she hung on, powerfully. As a youngster, Marjorie attended the Madames of the Sacred Heart Convent, in Vancouver, and she graduated with a degree in fine arts from Marylhurst College in Oregon. At the beginning of the second world war, Marjorie joined the air force, where she began driving army transport trucks. Marjorie went on to attain the rank of Flight Sergeant, teaching aircraft recognition to many recruits. It was there that she met her future husband Bill. Marjorie had a life long interest in drama, ballet, art, music and world events. As our father used to say, “she loved nothing better than to win an argument”. Marjorie is survived by her daughters, Joan Barnet, Mary Spensley (Doug), Patricia Oxendale, Eileen Oxendale, and her son, Mackin Oxendale. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Amie Furneaux, and her great-granddaughter, Sabina, as well as numerous nephews and nieces, in particular her god-son and nephew, Wilson Markle. Marjorie is predeceased by her husband, Bill, brother, Bill Mackin, sisters Dorothy Markle and Josephine Abernethy, and parents, Henry and Mary Mackin. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 – 14th Street S.W.) on Monday, May 29, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Edmund Vargas, Presider.
