Obituary of Running Rabbit
Sheila Rose Running Rabbit “Sa Kowoh’ Aomi” (Last Thunder) passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family and friends on Thursday, February 10, 2005 at the age of 49 years.
Sheila was born on July 31, 1955 at the Blackfoot Hospital on the Siksika Nation and battled her illness until the end. At the time of her passing, Sheila was employed at the Siksika Nation Post Office as Post Master since 1994 and enjoyed her job immensely. She was educated at the Crowfoot School, Bishop Grandin High School and Old Sun Community College, where she completed a Business Administration Course. Sheila participated in the first Ladies Cursillo on Siksika in 1984 with the theme song Isaiah 49. She enjoyed high school basketball while at Bishop Grandin, and watching her brothers, sons, nephews and grandsons play hockey and basketball, organizing family functions and events, watching the Calgary Flames and listening to music – especially by her favorite artist, Elvis Presley. Sheila will always be remembered for being a considerate and compassionate to all her family, friends and acquaintances. People were drawn to her kindness, generosity and humorous nature.
Sheila will be dearly missed by her loving companion Shawn Red Crow, her treasured children, Darrin ‘Chip’ (Maryceline) Wolfleg, Kennedy (Trevor) Smith, Jodi (Jackson) Running Rabbit and Kerri Running Rabbit, her cherished grandchildren Arianna, Justin, Camille ‘Flower’, Abby, Lennox, Daryl, and her sonny-boy Marcus adopted son Donnie Good Eagle, and her loyal and adoring pet, “Fly.” She will also be missed by her loving parents Joe and Annie Running Rabbit, her brothers whom she was always devoted to, Allan (Josie) Running Rabbit, Arnold (Lena) Running Rabbit, Morris (Myrna) Running Rabbit, Garry (Karen) Running Rabbit, Wes (Birdie) Running Rabbit, as well as her adopted brothers, Arnold Bish and Ron Boddy; her sisters who were always there for her, Colleen (Lionel) Two Horns, Joanne (Stuart) Running Rabbit, and Rita (Clarence) Running Rabbit. Also left to mourn Sheila are her nephews whom she cherished and her numerous nieces who were her best friends, her uncles Wayne (Beverley) Leather, Larry (Sarah) Leather, Clarence Leather, Steve Red Old Man, Joseph (Geraldine) Medicine Shield, George (Edith) Medicine Shield, Melvin (Rena) Running Rabbit and Tom (Trina) Running Rabbit; her aunts Rosa Doore, Rita Frank, Mary Ann Wells, Veronica (Wayne) Olds, Angelina (Raymond) Crow Chief, and Francis (Aloyisius) Many Bears. Also, extended families of the Running Rabbits, Duck Chiefs, Spring Chiefs, Leathers, Red Old Mans, Medicine Sheilds, Doores, Solways, Bear Hats, Weasel Heads, Many Fires, Franks, Rabbit Carriers, Big Snakes, McMasters, Calfs, and Whitneys; Sheila’s in-law Clarence and Emily Red Crow, Eddie Three Suns,. Lenny Crow Child, Alison (Jayme) Red Crow, Henry Red Crow, Rosella (Classy) Red Crow, James Red Crow and Max Red Crow and the family of Mark Wolfleg Sr.
Sheila was predeceased by her maternal grandparents Amos and Annie Leather, her paternal grandparents Haughton and Frances Running Rabbit, uncles and aunts, Jack and Mary Running Rabbit, Mark and Louise Spring Chief, Rosario and Emily Duck Chief, Louis and Alice Running Rabbit, Phillip and Emma Running Rabbit, Mike and Frances Running Rabbit, Louis and Margaret Red Old Man, Adam and Rosie Solway, Franklin Medicine Shield, Wilton Frank, Leslie Doore, Lillian Leather, Christine McMaster and Jean Medicine Shield, adopted sons Gino Royal and Richard Breaker, nieces Verlyn and Ilana Montour, nephew Dallas Jr. Running Rabbit and her mother-in-law Mary Margaret Wolfleg as well as her friends Carol Yellow Fly, Darlene Scout, Tony Ferrise and Georgina Buckle.
Wake Services will be held at the residence of Sheila Running Rabbit on Monday, February 14, 2005 with family at 2:00 p.m. and public and friends at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (Siksika Nation) on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at the Crowfoot Cemetery. McNeely, Dr. D. Zuege, DR. Lewkonia, Dr. L. Lobay and her niece Toni Running Rabbit for providing Sheila with care during her illness up until the time of her passing.
