Obituary of Norman Freight
Norman Freight, beloved husband of sixty-three years of Betty Irene Freight of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2005 at the age of 89 years.
Born and raised in North Shields, England, Norman went to sea as a young man. As a member of the British Merchant Marine, he was a decorated war hero after his ships were sunk three times by U Boats in the North Atlantic Ocean. Towards the end of the war, Norman joined the Royal Navy to serve on minesweepers. In 1958 Norman and his family immigrated to Edmonton, AB where he worked for the Alberta Government Boilers Branch. Shortly after, the family moved to Calgary where Norman began a twenty-five year career at SAIT teaching and writing correspondence courses in the Power Engineering Department. He was department head during a time of great growth and development in power engineering instruction. After his retirement in 1978, Norman and Betty enjoyed a busy and happy life traveling in their trailer, hiking in the Rockies and spending many winter holidays in Hawaii among friends. A member of the Steele’s Scouts, Norman was a great animal lover, an ardent hiker, a gardener and a keen fly fisherman. Norman and Betty were also active square dancers for many years. During recent years they particularly enjoyed their three grandchildren. Norman will always be remembered for his zest for life, his wit, his devoted work ethic and his love of family. Deeply and sadly missed by Betty and his family, we will always treasure those special memories of our great husband and Dad.
Besides his loving wife, Betty Irene, Norman is survived by his son Gordon (Nancy); his daughters Susan (Tim) and Dorothy (Don); three grandchildren, Brent, Scott, and Christine; younger brother Doug (Helen) of England; and Doug’s daughter Hilary.
