Obituary of Canon H. Donald Binney
Rev. Canon H. Donald (Don) Binney, beloved husband of Sally Binney of Calgary, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, June 10, 2004 at the age of 83 years.
Born in Moncton, NB, Don served as a Petty Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II and was stationed in Newfoundland, where he met his wife Sally. Don had a distinguished career in the Alberta Oil industry – from his beginnings on a drilling crew in Turner Valley in 1940 to his induction into the Canadian Oil Industry Hall of Fame in 2000. Don served as Senior Vice President of Bow Valley Industries and managed their offshore drilling interests in the Arctic, Norway, and the North Sea. Don retired from the oil industry in 1978 and, at age 57, became ordained as an Anglican priest. He served in managing the Diocesan Office in Calgary and in 1983, was presented with the honourary title of Reverend Canon, which is given for special service to the church. Don was respected, trusted and loved and has influenced many people’s lives through his steady presence and wise counsel. His legacy will live on in our family and community.
Besides his loving wife, Sally, Donald is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Skocdopole; daughter-in-law Carolyn Binney; as well as a granddaughter Maria Skocdopole and Darcy Funfer; and two great-grandchildren, Aaron and Amanda Kadatz, all of Calgary. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, William and Anna of Ottawa, ON. Donald was predeceased by his son Wayne Binney; great-granddaughter Shelby Kadatz; and his parents Jean and Hibbert Binney.
