Obituary of Leonard Carl Pallesen

Dr. Leonard Carl Pallesen, beloved husband of Mrs. Rita Pallesen of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre Harvest Hills on Monday, April 5, 2004 at the age of 87 years. Len was born September 1, 1916 in Calgary and took great pride in being an original Calgarian. He received his early education in Calgary and post education at University of Alberta, where he graduated with his B.Ed. in 1939. He then taught in Botha before joining the army in 1942, serving with the Survey Wing until his honourable discharge in 1945. Len worked with the Calgary School Board from 1945-1979, during which time he returned to the University of Alberta and taught while he obtained his Masters Degree in 1948. He also returned to the University of Calgary in 1970 at the age of 57 to obtain his Ph D. and served as Deputy Superintendent for the Calgary School Board from 1973 until he retired in 1979. He served as Councillor and Mayor of the then Summer Village of Chestermere from 1977 until 1990. Len was always involved with many communities over the years in Calgary and area. He was also a founding member of the Calgary Winter Club. Besides his loving wife Rita, Len is survived by son, Blair and his children Tria and Chad (Marnie) and their mother Denise; son Greg; all of Calgary; daughter Margo and her husband Noel Stampfli and their sons Sean and Kyle of Novato, California. He is also survived by Rita’s family, son Ben and his wife Sue Atkins, their children Jaime, Phil, Ryan and Brittany of Chestermere, son Jim Atkins and daughter Barbara Nemez and her children Helen and Isaac all of Calgary. Len was predeceased by his first wife Dorothy in 1993 and a brother Stan. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. with the Rev. Jagdutt Singh and the Right Rev.
