Obituary of Maureen Martha Dobbin

The community lost a real treasure with the death of Maureen on Sunday, March 28, 2004 in the city of Calgary. She was a friend to everyone she met in her many walks of life during the 87 years she lived. A true and generous Christian, Maureen spent countless hours helping other people, bringing humour and wisdom into their lives, and giving of herself to the betterment of the community. As a mother, Maureen remained supportive and engaged in the lives of her children from their births to her death. She was also a faithful and dedicated wife, a beautifully dear and caring grandmother, sister and aunt. After struggling with failing health for several years, she passed away at Carewest Royal Park. Born in Winnipeg on June 6, 1916, Maureen was predeceased in 1997 by Bob, her husband of fifty-four years, and her daughter, Paddy in 1959. She was a founding member of Scarboro United Church where, over the years, she contributed her leadership to Mission Band, Explorers, C.G.I.T., Young Peoples, Couples Club, Elda Daniels Group, and others. She was, for several years, a counsellor for Hi-C, both at Scarboro and for the city-wide Presbytery, where she touched the lives of thousands of young people. She was also a founding member of U.C.W., of Westside Seniors, and Westside Singers. Maureen was an early member of The Voice of Women and a variety of other organizations. She served dozens of charities over the years. She was an instigator for the construction of, and on the Board, for Bankview House Seniors Residence for sixteen years. Maureen left her home on 18A Street S.W. and moved into The Manors in 2001, from there she moved into Carewest Royal Park. Maureen is mourned by her children Michael (partner, Denis Wong), Roberta (husband, Dan Taylor), Richard (wife, Kathryn); and her grandchildren Patrick and Sally Taylor, Lewis and Jasmine Dobbin; two sisters, Nancy Barnes, and Sue Rutherford, and many beloved nieces and nephews. In thanksgiving for this remarkable woman, her life of kindness, her sense of fun, and her generosity, a Memorial Service will be held at Scarboro United Church on Sunday, April 4 at 3:00 P.M. All are invited to come in spirit of joy and celebration. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Bob and Maureen Dobbin Memorial Fund for Church Music at Scarboro United Church, 134 Scarboro Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T3C 2H1.
