Condolences
Well, this certainly comes long after the fact but I was doing a web search on the Strathmore & Bow Valley Standard and came across Ron’s name.
Forty years ago, myself and several other students in the journalism program at Mt. Royal College got an OFY grant to publish a paper between May and September out at Heritage Park. Ron tutored us in how to print a newspaper, pre-1915 style. He ran the Linotype (we were afraid to go near it) but he showed us all the other aspects of type setting and newspaper production. It was one of the most memorable summers of my life.
All of us thought the world of Ron, having had the good fortune to work with such a kind, intelligent, funny, gentle man. And he was a gentleman of the first water.
I haven’t seen or heard from any of my fellow students who also had the privilege of working with and learning from Ron but I feel safe in saying that their fondness for him would differ little from mine…
