Obituary of Vera Nelline Johnston

Vera Johnston of Calgary passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at the age of 81 years. Vera was born on February 27, 1922 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England to parents Doris and Victor Wightman. She came to Toronto, Ontario in 1925 with her family. Vera attended Thorndyke and Hexagon schools in Saskatchewan. Vera married Tom Johnston after his return from the war on October 26, 1945. Her passions were art, gardening and volunteering. Vera and Tom enjoyed many happy times with their five children and six grandchildren. Vera brought love and joy into the lives of her husband, children, grandchildren, family and friends. Vera often said, “It’s a wonderful life.” Vera is survived by a son, Dr. Robert Johnston of Manchester, CT; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy and Russ Robertson of Oakville, ON, Janice Johnston of Regina, SK, Glenda and Wolf Eberlein of Faro, YT, and Gwen Johnston of Calgary; and six grandchildren, Kate, Caleb, Amy, Jamie, Darcie, and Abbey. She is also survived by a sister Marjorie Zappe of Thunder Bay, ON; and her extended family. Vera was predeceased by her husband Dr. Thomas Johnston, and brother Douglas Wightman. Vera’s family gives thanks to her sister Marje for her loving companionship, and to the Johnston family for their support and love during Mom’s illness.
