Obituary of John William Broadhurst
John William Broadhurst, beloved husband of Flora Elizabeth (Betty) of Vernon, BC, passed away in Calgary on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at the age of 81 years.
Always devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren, John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends.
Born in England in 1922, John came to Canada as a young child and grew up on farms in Saskatchewan and BC. In World War II John served his country bravely as a tail gunner in the Moose Squadron of the RCAF. Despite the tumultuous times, John achieved his finest victory by finding and marrying his British war bride Flora Elizabeth Clarke. Bride and groom returned to Canada and set up their home in Kimberley, BC. John trained as an electrician and had a long career with the City of Kimberley, and later BC Hydro as a lineman and, subsequently, a safety officer prior to retiring in 1983.
John’s service to the broader community was embodied in his years of service to the Boy Scouts. He was instrumental in moulding the lives of many children in Kimberley and Vernon.
John and Betty shared a full and happy retirement with golf and travel. Although burdened with ill health of late, there were many years to be thankful for.
Most important to John was his devoted wife and family. Besides his loving wife Betty, John is survived by his three wonderful children, two daughters and sons-in-law Leslie and Bob Johnston and Dawn and Tom Yates, and a son and daughter-in-law John and Bev Broadhurst; and seven grandchildren, Robert and Richelle Johnston, Travis, Jamie and Breanne Yates and John and Kymberlee Broadhurst, all of whom were his greatest treasures in life. His favourite time was visiting with his family and especially playing with his grandkids. He will be remembered with a warm heart and the fondest of good memories by all.
A reception for family and friends will be planned for early in the New Year to join together in a Celebration of John’s Life. To forward condolences go to www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
The family would like to thank the caregivers who supported John so well and the many friends who have extended their support during this trying time.
