Hazel Hacker

Obituary of Hazel Hacker

It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Hazel Hacker on Monday, December 15, 2003, at the age of 86. Hazel was born June 27th, 1917 in Banff, Alberta where her father, Arthur Holland, was a master carpenter on the construction of the Banff Springs Hotel. Her family later moved to Calgary where she and her two sisters went to school and grew up. While visiting relatives in Victoria, BC she met John Hacker, a Petty Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, and they married in 1938. At the outset of World War II they were transferred to Rimouski and Quebec City. When John was killed in action in the Gulf of St. Lawrence Hazel returned to live with her family in Calgary, where their daughter, Dianne was born. Hazel worked at Eaton’s and The Bay as a bookkeeping machine operator until she retired in 1982. Hazel loved to travel and particularly enjoyed times at her daughter and son-in-law’s cabin in Windermere, BC with her grandson and his friends. She was also a great gardener and took pride in her roses and backyard flower gardens. She was an independent person, with an outgoing personality, great sense of humour and was fun to be around. Hazel will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Dianne Ostermann, her son-in-law Bevis and grandson Kyle, and her many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Hazel’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.), on Saturday, December 20, 2003 at 10:30 A.M.
